"You’ve got to find what you love"

This was the advice Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, gave the graduating students of Stanford
back in 2005. The teen entrepreneurs in today’s post were very young then, but that message is
as true for them as it was for those graduates.

                                   a. Julián Ríos Cantú

Inspired by his mother’s fight against breast cancer, this Mexican teen
developed a bra which could help detect early signs of the disease. The
bra – which contains over 200 sensors – helped him win the top prize in
the 2017 edition of the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards. He now runs
his own company, Eva, continuing to develop innovative technology for
                                 women’s health.

Born in 2001, at the age of 11 he appeared on an American reality show,
Shark Tank, to promote his business venture, Mo’s Bows. He started making
bow ties with his grandmother, as he wanted an accessory to help him
look sharp and show his personality. Since the days of sewing in his
grandmother’s kitchen, he’s built a creative empire, selling bow ties, pocket
squares and, keeping up with global trends, face masks.

                                   c. Anika Chebrolu

This 14-year-old Texan scientist won a $25,000 prize in the 2020 Young
Scientist Challenge after potentially discovering a vaccine for Covid-19.
Her grandfather was a chemistry professor who encouraged her to ask
questions and develop a scientific mind from a young age. Her interest in
viruses came from learning about the 1918 influenza pandemic and how
many people die each year from the flu, even before the world was hit by
                                 Covid-19.

                                    d. Ukuzibuza

This is a Chichewa word meaning “to ask oneself”, and it’s the perfect name
for a social media platform created by five South African students during
the global pandemic. Their motivation for creating the website was to build
a space where young people could share creative content and develop
connections while they were in a national lockdown.

For many years, society led us to believe that if √ write 180 – 200 words
we were rich, we were successful. However, as a

would argue that we cannot measure a person’s grammar

For example, a number of wealthy businesspeople happy?
come from wealthy families, and although they 2. Which is more important to be
have worked hard to build their own companies, successful: luck or hard work?
it is certainly easier if you have financial support
to begin with. That said, it is also true that there 3. Will a good education
are many successful people who came from poor guarantee you success in life?
families and worked hard to achieve their dreams
and earn their salaries. In this case, it would be fair
to say that their wealth is a sign of their success.

In my opinion, though, I believe we should not only look at wealth as a sign of success as many
people have dreams which do not involve becoming millionaires. In fact, for some people,
success means being well-known within their profession, helping others, or spending time with
                  family.

To sum up, I believe that there are many different ways to be successful and that while wealth
can be one way to measure a person’s success, we should not assume their wealth and
                  success go hand in hand.

It had been a wonderful summer and, looking Susanna and Emilio would probably be
back, Berta couldn’t remember a time she’d there too, laughing and making jokes about
been happier. But now, as she slowly trudged the teachers, or chatting about what they’d
towards the school gates, she felt a strong done over the summer. Berta’s mind went
desire to throw her schoolbag to the floor and back to those glorious days on the beach,
run away, as fast as she could. The main gate lazing in the sunshine and listening to
seemed darker than it had the previous year music, or splashing about in the water. She

all the excitement of being in the first year had looked as she came running out of the
of Bachillerato. That year had been filled with ocean, and the sparkle in her eyes as she
joy – making new friends, taking the learning stretched out on the towel next to Berta’s.
of her favorite subjects to a higher level. But
this year… this year, the end-of-year exams
loomed already. Gone was the care-free first “Hey, stranger!” Pulled out of her daydream,
Berta turned to see Abi standing beside
year of fun and now came the hard work, the her.
endless revision sessions, the extra homework,
the pressure of getting good grades for the “Come on! Don’t want to be late on the
next step in life. first day,” she said, as she grabbed Berta’s
hand and pulled her through the gate.
Berta couldn’t help but smile. Perhaps this
Berta paused at the gate and stood quietly year wouldn’t be so
as excitable freshmen streamed past her. She
could see across the yard to the high school bad after all.
building entrance, and she wondered who
would already be there, putting books into
lockers, picking up timetables from the office,
and deciding which notebook to use for which
             subject.

She felt sure Jaime would already be there
             – he’d sent her a message as soon as he’d
woken up that day, full of excitement to be
going back to school. An excitement Berta
definitely wasn’t feeling at that moment.

Grammar past perfect simple tense / past simple vs. past perfect simple tense

See the structure of the past perfect tense below:

                           + I / You / We/ He / They had
                                                                                                   been to Canada.
                          - I / You / We/ He / They hadn't

? Had I / we you / he / they been to Canada?

We use had and then add the past participle form (V3) of the main verb to form a
sentence in the past perfect simple tense.

We use the past perfect simple tense to talk about completed actions that happened
before a specific time or another action in the past.
I had locked all the windows when the rainstorm started.

We also use the past perfect simple tense to express a period or continuance before
a specific time or another action in the past. (Only with non-progressive/stative verbs)
We had wanted to buy a house for years when we found this one.
I had been a shy girl until I started high school.

                 Writing Project

A Read the short story. What literary genre do you think it is?

                                          The Pocketwatch

His grandfather’s pocketwatch had sat on the bedside table for years now, and Vernon had
never touched it. It was such a beautiful, fragile object that he had always been afraid he
would pick up and then drop. But he would often stare at the face, with the delicate black
hands on their steady rotation. He had always found the
gentle tick-tock helped him to sleep, even when he was
             feeling particularly anxious about schoolwork.

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
So he was surprised when he woke up that morning to
silence. Before he had even opened his eyes, he knew
something was different, though it took him a moment to
realize what. Then he suddenly turned over to face the
pocketwatch, and saw that it had stopped in the night,
             the three hands resting peacefully.

As he went downstairs, he wondered why it had happened

             – did it need a new battery? If so, he could pop into town
and pick one up that morning. His parents normally did
the food shopping on the weekend, so he could get a lift
             with them.

That’s when he realized the whole house was quiet – he

couldn’t hear his dad in the kitchen, making pancakes as he so often did on a Saturday
morning. His younger sister wasn’t watching noisy cartoons in the living room.

In fact, he realized there was no sound, anywhere. No radio in the kitchen, no birdsong coming

from the garden, no cars on the street outside. It was almost as if the whole world had just…
             stopped.

                                                         Why Do We Gossip?

Whether we're talking about our celebrity crushes, or sharing a juicy bit of information about
so-and-so's grades at school, we all love to feel like we know about other people. In fact, social
psychologist Laurent Bègue says around 60% of conversations with adults involve talking about
                  another person who isn't there.

But why did we first start to gossip? Robin Dunbar, an anthropologist at Oxford University,
believes we evolved to build our social relationships through speech. While our ape ancestors
spend hours of each day grooming each other as part of their relationship, humans replaced this
physical interaction with a spoken one. Klaus Zuberbuehler, a professor looking into the origins of
language, believes that we originally spoke about other people in order to identify their role in

the hunter-gatherer community: Who will stand where during the hunt? Who's the fastest runner?
                  The best with a spear?

Psychiatrist Frédéric Fanget argues that we use gossip to feel better about ourselves. For
example, if you know a classmate has done badly on an exam, you might share that information
with others to make yourself feel better about your own grade.

Is it really gossip, though, if you're sharing information which is true about another person? The
simple answer is yes. According to Sherri Gordon, bullying prevention expert, gossip usually
involves humiliation of the person it's about. Even though your classmate did badly on their exam,
telling others about it is an act of gossiping as it wasn't your information to share publicly.

So, while talking about others is common within social groups, we need to be very wary of
not sharing personal information or humiliating others. The negative effects of gossip are wide-
ranging: it can cause anxiety and depression, and lead to bullying. Before you share something
you know about others, it's always worth asking yourself: how would I feel if someone told others
                  this about me?

As you see above, a conditional sentence is formed in the simple past tense, and the main
clause is formed as "would/could + V1". These two clauses are also interchangeable as they
            are in other conditional forms.

The second conditional is used to talk about imaginations, dreams or situations that are

            unlikely in reality.

If she won the lottery, she could help the poor people. (She probably won't win the lottery.)
To give advice or offer an opinion, the second conditional can be used. In this usage, if I
            were you… is frequently used.
If I were you, I wouldn't call him again. (But I'm not you.)
If I were the boss, I wouldn't let Valerie be late every morning. (But I'm not the boss.)
Question forms are common, especially in
            spoken language.
What would you do if you were a rich person? NOTE: I would eat it if I liked it.

                                                       third (past unreal) conditional

We use the third conditional to talk about impossible events and situations, which cannot
be changed in the past. See the following structure:
condition (past perfect result (would / could + The speaker didn't know

As you see above, the conditional sentence is formed in the past perfect tense, and
the main clause is formed as 'would / could + have + V3'. These two clauses are also
interchangeable as they are in other conditional forms.
The third conditional is also used to express regret about something in the past and to
wish the past had happened differently.
If I had studied more at high school, I would have been accepted to a better college.

If I had known the movie was so boring, I wouldn't have recommended it to you. (But
I didn't know, so I recommended it to you)

You can use this structure to criticize someone/something or emphasize mistakes.
If you had hurried up, you wouldn't have missed the bus yesterday.

                                - Elena, 15
My friend's been chatting to this guy online for a few weeks now. She says she
really likes him and finds him easy to talk to but then the other day she said he's
started asking her to send him her phone number. I told her it's a bad idea, but
she says she doesn't want him to think she's a prude.

One of my buddies has started hanging out with a bad crowd after school, and
I don't know what he's doing, but he comes to school with new clothes and a
new cell, but won't tell me where he got them. He thinks I'm jealous, but I'm really
                                worried about him.

I saw a guy in my class taking something out of the teacher's bag during the
break the other day – I think it might have been a copy of the next exam we've
got. He took a photo of it and then put it back in. I think he saw me, though,
'cause in my locker later that day was a piece of paper that said, "Snitch, and I'll

B Ella has decided that for her birthday for Sweet
Sixteen, she wants to give people glass pyramids
filled with colored sand, as she’s having an Ancient
Egypt-themed party. However, she needs to know
how many bags of each color to order. Look at
Ella’s idea for the pyramid. Are the following
             statements true or false?
             1. She needs more blue than green sand.
             2. She needs more red than yellow sand.

             3. The color she’ll be using the most of is purple.

C Project Filling a pyramid with colored sand
Content: to identify the amount of sand required
Learning outcome: to calculate the volume of a pyramid

Evidence of learning: a table showing the quantities for each color
             For this project:
√ Work in a group of three
√ Identify the area of each colored section on the graph
√ Identify the volume of each section in the pyramid
√ Produce a table showing your calculations

Ella draws a cross-section of the pyramid. This means she can work out the area and then the
volume of sand she’ll need for each layer .

                  1. Identify the area of each colored
section using the following equations: width (w)
the area of a trapezoid is 1/2(a+b)*h,
where a and b measure the width of 6
                  the section 5
the area of the red triangle is ½(w*h) 4

                  2. Using the equation to calculate the 1

                                        Bizarre Diets

Are you feeling like a bit of a couch potato? Do you need to lose a few extra
pounds? Weight loss is a piece of cake with one of these diets!

For as long as there have been ads, there have been individuals and companies
offering us incredible diets to lose weight quickly. Unfortunately, many of these diets
often involve "crash-dieting", which will help you lose a few pounds quickly, but not
sustain the weight loss. Here are some of the crazier ideas.

Do you put vinegar on your fries or salad? In the 1820s, an English author used it as
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
part of his weight-loss regime. Lord Byron took the phrase ‘an apple a day keeps the
doctor away’ and tweaked it a little by drinking apple cider vinegar – whole glasses
of undiluted vinegar. While a little vinegar can have some health benefits, health
professionals warn of the side effects of having too much vinegar as it can destroy
the enamel on your teeth and lead to severe stomach problems.

If restricting what you eat seems like too much of a bother, why not try a slimming
soap? These became popular in the 1920s and ‘30s, with La-Mar Reducing Soap
claiming you could use it to be "as slim as you wish". A similar product, Dr Paul
Bouchard’s Flesh Reducing Soap promised to "absorb all fatty tissues from any part
of the body, and bring back natural slimness even to the worst case."

Before slimming soaps were invented, women went to other extremes in the name
of beauty. They would take a pill with a tapeworm inside as it was believed that the
tapeworm would eat any "extra" calories. These women purposefully put a parasite in
their bodies to help them lose weight! And the side effects of a tapeworm infection
                – even voluntary – include diarrhea, fever, liver damage, and perhaps weight gain,
as the tapeworm can produce an increase in appetite.

One diet fad which doesn’t have life-threatening side effects comes from Japan.
Michitaka Hirose, a university professor, has invented a pair of virtual reality glasses
which can trick your brain into helping you eat less. For example, they can make
the food you’re about to tuck into appear larger, without affecting the size of other
things around you. This makes your brain think you’re eating a larger portion, which
helps you to feel full more quickly. He and his team have also used scent releasers
built into the headset to trick people into thinking they were eating something far
more delicious than they actually were. Imagine chewing on a carrot that smells of
chocolate, or a piece of lettuce that has the aroma of a crunchy cookie!

                     Grammar inseparable phrasal verbs

Some transitive phrasal verbs (phrasal verbs which require an object) do not allow an object
to be placed between the verb and particle. The object must follow the complete verb. These
verbs are called inseparable phrasal verbs.

               See the examples below:
I came across one of my classmates on our vacation. (find accidentally)
Do you think Ryan takes after his father? (resemble)
In these examples, you cannot insert other words in between come and across and take and
               after.
Also, see frequently used inseparable phrasal verbs with their definitions:

A Day in the Kitchen with an English Teacher

I caught up with Anja, an English teacher living in Spain, to ask about the things she likes
to cook and eat during the day.

Anja, you’re originally from Germany. Are the meal times very
                    different there compared to Spain?

Absolutely! People eat later here in Spain, so lunch might be at 2 or 3 o’clock
and dinner at 9 or 10 p.m. Also, they tend to have a bigger meal at lunchtime
in Spain and then a healthy snack in the evening.

Tell us about a typical day for you.

Well, obviously it’s changed since the pandemic as I’m teaching online from
home now. Before, I’d get up at 8ish and have some toast for breakfast. Here,
people have oil on their toast, which I found strange at first, but now I really
like the flavor, and I have it most days. After planning my lessons, I’d take a trip
to the market each day and pick up some meat and veggies to cook for lunch.
I teach in the afternoons here, so from 4 p.m. ’til ten, I’m in class. Afterwards, I
usually just have a sandwich or a salad.

You said it’s different because of working online. How so?

Well, working from home means I have a bit more time to prepare meals as I’m not
going out to teach, so I stay in bed a little later! However, with the restrictions, they
recommended going out to buy food as little as possible, so now I try to plan my
meals for the week and do one big shopping trip on Saturday.

Is there anything you miss from home?

Day-to-day, not really, and to be honest, there are a couple of supermarkets here which
sell some German products. I guess I do miss good pretzels as I haven’t found a bakery
                         yet that sells them.

Have you tried making them yourself?

I tried once, but it was a bit of a disaster and they just didn’t have the right taste
or texture! I’m not a bad cook, but there are some things that just don’t taste right
                          when you make them yourself!

B Look at these extracts from recipes. What dishes do you think they are for?
                     1. Chop up the onion and garlic. After you’ve fried the meat, add tomatoes and leave to
cook for 25 minutes. Taste the sauce to see if you need any salt and pepper, then mix in
                       the cooked spaghetti.

                     2. Pour a little of the mixture into a hot frying pan and cook on both sides. You can serve
them with sweet or savory ingredients, for example salmon and cream cheese, or banana
                       and caramel sauce.

                     3. Mix the flour and cocoa powder into the butter and sugar. Stir in some chocolate chips
and nuts then bake for approximately 20 minutes.

Culinary Traditions from around the World

UNESCO recognizes not only monuments and important historical sites, but also
celebrates a country’s traditions and cuisine. We took a trip around the world to look
at four of the foods which made it onto the list of Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

               Airag
The tradition of making milk in Mongolia has been around for centuries and the
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
technique to produce it is passed on from one generation to the next. To make airag,
horse’s milk is collected and poured into a leather bag, called a khokhuur, then yeast
is added. This bag usually hangs at the entrance to the family yurt (tent) and is stirred
regularly. The milk tastes a little sour, but contains many vitamins and minerals and is
a staple part of the Mongolian diet.

               Kimchi
You’ll find this spicy dish throughout Korea, served alongside other dishes, both at home
and in restaurants. It can be made with lots of different vegetables, though cabbage is
often the most popular. The cabbage is chopped up and mixed with salt, ginger, and
chili flakes. People sometimes add garlic or fish sauce to give it more flavor.
               Lavash
This enormous flatbread is baked in different countries, sometimes with different names,
and there are also a variety of traditions surrounding it. For example, in some areas
of Azerbaijan, when a woman gets married and goes to her new house, her mother-
in-law places a lavash over her shoulders. In Kyrgyzstan, where it’s known as jupka,
there’s a tradition of sharing the bread at a funeral, to provide a better afterlife for
               the person who has died.
               Terere
This Paraguayan drink is similar to Argentina’s mate, though it’s drunk cold, often with
ice. There is a strong tradition in Paraguay of using plants for medicinal purposes
and many people will add additional ingredients to their terere to help with any
health problems they have. The knowledge of which plants to use has been passed
on through generations since the sixteenth century. Nowadays, you can find different
mixes of terere in markets around South America.

Grammar present perfect simple tense vs.
                                                        present perfect continuous tense

                                                         present perfect simple tense vs.
                                                         present perfect continuous tense

We use the present perfect simple to talk about recently completed
actions (and often their results). We don’t mention the exact time but
we emphasize the action itself. Compare:
I’ve stayed in this hotel before. (I stayed here in the past, the action
stopped but I don’t know the time. This doesn’t emphasize the
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
                                     length of time)
I’ve been staying in this hotel for three days. (I started staying in
this hotel three days ago, the action is going on, I’m still staying
here. This emphasizes the length of time)

We use the present perfect simple and the present perfect
continuous to talk about an action that started in the past and is
still going on. Especially with the verbs, "live, study, work, teach, etc."
there is almost no difference in the meaning.

Remember that stative verbs are generally used with the present
perfect simple although we want to talk about the duration of the
                                     action.
I’ve known Denis for years. not I’ve been knowing Denis for years.

We also frequently use time expressions, such as just, already, yet,
                                     before, so far, twice, many times, etc. in the present perfect simple;
however, we use for, since, recently, lately, this week, etc. in the
                                     present perfect continuous.
                                     e.g.
Anabella has been to Mexico before.
Anabella has been flying to Mexico for an hour.

Note: It is also possible to use "for" and "since" in the present perfect
simple; however, the difference is that it especially emphasizes the
duration of the action in the present perfect continuous.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Big Companies

Did you know that a vast proportion of the products available worldwide is owned by just
ten companies? These companies have a huge influence on what people eat and how
workers are treated, as well as being responsible for the environmental impact of their
businesses. While these companies do a lot of good, there are also some practices which
              people feel are irresponsible.

Nestlé is a Swiss company which was founded in 1866. It owns brands such as KitKat,
Perrier mineral water and Buitoni, which offers Italian products. The company employs over
330,000 people in 194 countries and is estimated to be the second-largest food company
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
in the world. On a positive note, it’s considered to be one of the best companies to work
for in Europe and is working hard on its energy use and environmental impact. It is also
the largest producer of bottled water, and this has caused some problems. For example,
there was a 2017 scandal in Michigan (USA), when a town was suffering a water crisis,
while Nestlé was still bottling water from the area to sell. The company paid just $200 a
year for the water, while residents were paying around $200 a month for tap water they
              couldn’t drink.

When we see the name Mars, your mind might automatically go to one of their main
products, the Mars bar, but the company owns much more than just the candy that will
help you "work, rest and play". It also owns Uncle Ben’s and Wrigley’s gum as well as being
one of the major owners of pet-related food companies and veterinary services, winning
the 2020 award for “Best Vet in the United Kingdom”. However, it was also in the news a
few years earlier for illegally growing cocoa in areas around the Ivory Coast and Ghana.
Using land to produce cocoa is thought to have reduced the elephant population from
several hundred thousand to less than 400.

Unilever owns many familiar household names, such as Knorr and Ben & Jerry’s. The
company’s sites across all five continents are all powered by renewable electricity, an
objective they reached in 2019, and they also plan to halve their footprint by 2030.
However, the company also produces a number of cleaning products and cosmetics, and
there were concerns that some ingredients for their products were tested on animals.

Grammar past simple tense vs. present perfect tense

The usages of the simple past and present perfect are similar because they can both
be used to talk about completed past actions. Therefore, it is sometimes confusing to
                      state the difference between them.

We use the present perfect for expressing our experiences, so we usually don’t
mention the action's exact time. It is important to emphasize what happened, not
when it happened. Besides, we use the time expressions ever, just, already, yet,
before, many times, etc. in the present perfect tense.

Cancun is my favorite city. I have visited there many times. (We don’t know when
the speaker visited the city, but we know that s/he did it.)

We use the simple past tense to state when the action happened, and also use the
time expressions yesterday, … ago, last …, etc. in the simple past tense.

Cancun is my favorite city. I visited there last year. (We know when the speaker
                          visited the city: last year.)

                                                 What is Matter?
Everything around us is made of matter: our bodies, the chairs we sit on, and even the
air we breathe. Matter is defined as anything which has 1 – the amount
            of space something needs.
There are four states of matter: solid, liquid, gas and 2 .

Objects in a solid state maintain their shape as the position of the 3
            within them are fixed.

Objects in a liquid state have 4 molecules, while in a gas, the
5 aren’t strong enough to keep the atoms and molecules together.

Objects can change their state when they are exposed to high or low temperatures, although
for some objects these temperatures need to be extreme. A solid can 6 or
dissolve to become a liquid, and when a liquid is heated, it evaporates and becomes a gas.

Moving the other way, a gas can 7 to become a liquid, and a liquid can
8 or set to become a solid.

C Project States of matter in the kitchen

Content: to identify the temperature at which solids melt and at which liquids reach
              boiling point

Learning outcome: to predict and observe changes in state
Evidence of learning: a report on the results of the experiment
              For this project:
√ Work in a group of four
√ Predict the order in which the foods will melt
√ Predict the order in which the liquids will reach boiling point
√ Carry out experiments to check your predictions

√ Produce an individual report with your predictions, the results, and your conclusions

Sharing a Love of Cultural Heritage

We caught up with Las Muñecas, a mariachi band from Las Cruces, New Mexico,
to chat about their experiences sharing their musical heritage. They started playing
together after three of the band members met at a bilingual art school in Las
Cruces, La Academia Dolores Huerta. The school taught Mexican arts including ballet
folklorico (traditional dance) and mariachi, but after graduating, they discovered
there weren’t any local bands to join. They decided to start their own group and
became the first all-female teen mariachi band in the southwest. We found out more
from Daniela Robinson, who plays the guitarrón, a large acoustic bass guitar.
Have you faced any challenges as an all-female mariachi band?

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
At first, we weren’t sure if we were going to be accepted into the mariachi community
being female teens, but in the end, we do what makes us happy and what makes
our audiences happy. Being different has actually worked to our advantage - we are
super popular and booked quite often. Many times we are chosen because we are
young, intelligent females working hard, dressing stylishly, acting professionally, and
                 entertaining with our hearts!

What do you enjoy most about performing?
What I enjoy most is seeing it put smiles on people’s faces.. Sometimes they’ll even
dance, clap, or sing along! It’s crazy how mariachi music has such a special place
                 in people’s hearts.

How has the global pandemic affected you and your music?
That’s the great thing about mariachi and music in general; nothing can stop music,
not even the pandemic! We’re all able to still practice our instruments at home, and
we get together once a week and rehearse together in a socially-distanced area.
As for performing, all of our gigs at the moment are outdoors, socially-distanced,
and with all safety precautions taken. So, in other words, we’re still practicing and
                 performing!
Las Muñecas: Paola Hernandez (violin), Khalila Gilbert and Samara Nuñez (trumpet),

Daniela Robinson (guitarrón) and Jasmin Saucedo (vihuela)

E Read the text and answer the questions.

              1. Where did some of the band members first meet?
              2. Why did they decide to start Las Muñecas?
              3. What benefit of being an all-female mariachi band does Robinson mention?
              4. How does she say the audience reacts to their music?
              5. Were they still able to rehearse and perform when the pandemic hit in 2020?

What traditional music is there from your country or culture?
Are you interested in learning to play traditional music? Why (not)?

Grammar reported speech / reporting questions

                                                           reported speech

                     a. statements
When we make a reported speech statement, it means that we report the statement by
making changes to it. In reported speech, we may need to change the pronouns, verb
tenses and time phrases in the original statement. In this case, we don’t use quotation
                     marks.
The reporting verbs say and tell are used to report a statement. The reporting verb say
isn’t followed by an object pronoun, we can use it after tell. Also using that after these
words is optional. We don’t have to use it in every sentence.
“I am at the bus station now.” Ava said (that) she was at the bus station at that time.
“We enjoy this party.” Juan said (that) they enjoyed that party.

                          b. questions
There are two main question forms in English: Wh- questions and yes-no questions.
Therefore, we report questions in two different ways.

                          1) reporting Wh- questions: 2) reporting yes-no questions:
The usual word order is used in The same structure and changes studied
reported questions, too. However, we before are also applied for reporting
form the sentence following the question yes-no questions. However, we use if/
word like an affirmative sentence. whether instead of the question word.
We make the pronoun, tense and time Martín asked, “Is it raining now?”
changes in questions. Besides, we use Martín asked if it was raining then.
‘ask’ as the reporting verb in questions. Mrs Pérez asked, “Can you send the
Rafael asked, “What are you doing?” emails?

Rafael asked me what I was doing. Mrs Pérez asked the secretary if she
Patricia asked, “Where does Oliver could send the emails.
come from?” Patricia asked me where
                          Oliver came from.

A Look at these reported statements. What would the direct speech have been?

Argentinian dancer Miguel Zotto said tango was like writing a

He's a funny guy: praise and criticism
                                                 for two comedic actors

Charlie Chaplin and Rowan Atkinson, perhaps most famously recognized as The Tramp
and Mr Bean respectively, have always made people laugh. Both their characters were
silent stars, playing on the visual comedy of slapstick to appeal to audiences around
                    the world.

Both actors were born in the UK but had very different starts to life. Chaplin grew up
in the early 20th century in a poor family, and before the age of nine, he had already
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
been sent out to earn money for the family. Though Atkinson didn't grow up in the
same financial situation as Chaplin, he also had his own problems as a child and was
reportedly bullied at school for his stutter.

However, the praise for both young men when they took to the stage was inspiring. One
of Atkinson's teachers said, "In class, he was very middle of the road. There was nothing
outstanding about him. But when he walked on-stage, he was exceptional." Chaplin also
received encouraging feedback on his acting and was quickly being offered leading
                    roles in London's West End.

Unfortunately, they have both had their fair share of criticism to deal with as well. When
Atkinson took on the more serious role of a French detective in a British drama series,
his performance received poor reviews from many critics. Chaplin also received criticism
for taking a serious turn. At the end of his 1940 The Great Dictator, a parody of Hitler,
he gave a five-minute speech against war and fascism. Although many people loved
the film – and in fact, it was one of the biggest money-makers of the era – Chaplin's
introduction of politics into the world of Hollywood had an impact on his popularity.

Sadly, part of the celebrity lifestyle is dealing with both praise and criticism – whether it
be about your talent, or sometimes more commonly (and often more favourably), your
private life, your looks, or your wealth.

We use the passive voice when we focus on the action, not the subject of the verb. It is
not important or not known who or what performs the action. We also need a transitive
verb to form a passive voice.
This house was built in the 1970s.

We also use the passive voice with the preposition by + the agent (a person/thing
performs the action) –just after the main verb to emphasize this part.
This house was built by Uncle Jorge in the 1970s.

I Dare You to Watch This Movie

Nerve is a 2016 adventure which follows Vee (Emma Roberts) as she takes on a series
of increasingly scary dares in an online game, in the hope of winning the big prize and
proving to her friend that she’s not a scaredy-cat.

The movie has an interesting premise: in an online game – Nerve – there are players
and watchers; players carry out challenges for cash, watchers decide the challenges.
While the types of challenges being set might seem unrealistic, the movie does make
you think about society, the steps people will take for their fifteen minutes of fame and
how easy it can be to avoid responsibility for your actions online. However, it’s best not
to think too much about the actual logistics of the game, or you’ll end up with more
questions than answers (Who’s filming all the challenges? Do the police just have no
               idea this is happening?).

Roberts and Dave Franco shine in their roles, despite the script being a little awkward
at times, and of course, there are also the clichés you’d expect to find in a teen movie:
a best friend has a secret crush on the leading lady, friends argue but make up, in
the end, the usual. All in all, it’s your typical shy-girl-gets-the-guy type of movie, though
more action-packed than most other teen movies, and even though it has a fairly
standard Hollywood ending, there’s enough excitement to keep you entertained for 90
               minutes.

D Read the text and choose the best summary.
                     a) Food and gender equality are two issues which affect people around the world.
                     b) There are lots of undernourished women and overweight men around the world.

                     c) The UN is focusing on two issues – food and gender equality – until 2030.

                                                Global Issues on your Doorstep

It's often easy to watch the news and distance ourselves from problems which are occurring
in different areas. However, if we dig a little, we can usually discover that these issues are
happening within our own countries, towns and neighborhoods – though perhaps not to
                     such extreme extents.

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
Take for example food, which the United Nations (UN) lists as one of its 22 global issues.
It's thought that around 11% of the world is undernourished, while at the same time 39%
of adults worldwide are overweight. The UN has a Zero Hunger target for 2030, but with
world hunger on the rise since 2018, there are concerns that they won't meet this objective.
Although it's true that two-thirds of undernourished people live in Sub-Saharan Africa and
southern Asia, the fact is that many governments across the globe are facing the need to
support families. For example through access to food banks. Have around 2,000 food banks
and one organization, Hunger in America, which supports over 50 million people in the US.

Another major issue is gender equality. Despite the fact that over 140 nations guarantee
gender equality in their constitutions, there is still incredible discrimination against women. In
many countries, women earn less than men and those with children have an even worse deal.
Since the first UN Conference on Women was held in Mexico City in 1975, representatives
from most countries have met every five years to review gender equality issues and set
targets for the future, but there is a long way to go. The UN Secretary-General, António
Guterres believes that empowering women and girls is the unfinished business of our time.

There are so many other issues to mention and we can easily find ways in which they
affect our corner of the globe without thinking too hard: climate change, challenges to an
individual or group's human rights, education, health and aging, to name but a few.
Which global issues affect your local area?

                   Dear Future Me,

How are you doing? What’s the world like where you are, and where in the world are
you? I guess I’m writing this so I remember what my future plans are, so I can look back
and say, “I did it!”. So, here goes…

I’m going to study law at college, but I think first I’ll want to take a break from school
and go on a gap year (assuming it’s safe to travel!). In two years’ time, I’ll be hanging
out on a beach in Thailand and I’ll have spent a couple of months visiting different
countries in south-east Asia. I’m really looking forward to trying some authentic pad
                   thai!
Then, if I’m lucky, I’ll have aced all my exams and have great grades to study law. I
can’t wait to move to another city and have a bit of freedom and the responsibility
living alone. But I know I’ll probably miss my dad and little sis and I’ll be traveling home
                   every weekend to see them!
And then what does the future hold? Who knows? Maybe I’ll be a wealthy lawyer
someday and I’ll spend my vacations on my private yacht, but to be honest, more than
anything, I hope I’m doing something that I love and that I’m spending time with my
family and friends and that I’m happy.
Going to leave you with this quote from Amit Ray, that Indian spiritualist we read about
in ethics class: “To catch the rainbows of your dreams, love yourself, love what you do,
                   and how you do.”
