Glamping – glamorous camping – is for
people who want to experience nature,
but with a little luxury. It means a more
spacious tent and a more comfortable
bed, generally with a duvet rather than
a sleeping bag. There’s often electricity
and lights in the tent too, so no more
trying to find your clean underwear with
              a flashlight!

Advantages of glamping Disadvantages of glamping

It encourages more people to camp It’s more expensive than camping
                 and enjoy nature.

Trips to Get Your Body Moving!

For some people, a perfect getaway involves lying on a beach and doing nothing for two weeks.
However, if you’re after a more adventurous vacation, we’ve got three ideas for you.

                        From zip-lining to snorkeling

When you want to get the best of everything and combine nature and adventure, look
no further than a trip to Costa Rica with Apogee. You can spend time hiking through
the rainforest and zooming over the trees, and you might spot a sloth or a monkey.
But there’s also plenty of time to relax on the beach and enjoy the tropical waters –

they’ll even teach you to surf! As part of a community project, you’ll also cook and eat
traditional Costa Rican dishes in a beautiful eco-lodge.

                        Cave of Swallows

If you’re not afraid of heights, take a trip to the incredible Sótano de las Golondrinas
in Mexico. It’s one of the largest vertical caves in the world, dropping 1,904 feet from
the top to the cave floor – that’s deep enough to fit the Eiffel Tower in! Just looking
down into it might be enough of an adrenaline rush for you, but if you need a bigger
hit, the cave is a popular destination for BASE jumpers. But be ready for the trip back
up – although the jump only lasts about 10 seconds, it takes more than 40 minutes to
               get back out again!

                        Survivalist Camp

Ever wondered what it would be like to survive on a post-apocalyptic Earth? Thankfully,

Conjunctions are words that join sentences, clauses, or words within a clause.
Correlative conjunctions come in pairs and join words or groups of words that
                       are equal.

In the following sentences, the correlative conjunctions are in bold:

We can drink either tea or coffee. (this OR that)
He is neither nice nor friendly. (not this AND not that)
She will buy both this dress and those shoes. (this AND that)

Note 1: Remember that neither already has a negative meaning (like never), so we
don’t use it in a negative structure.
I will eat neither steak nor chicken. = I won’t eat steak or chicken.

Note 2: We can also follow both, either or neither with of + the + noun; the noun
                       must be plural.
Both of the plants survive on sunlight, water, and nutrients in the soil.
Neither of the people wanted to stay at the hall for hours.

                                                    Reflexive pronouns

A reflexive pronoun is used as an object when the object is the same person or thing as
              the subject of the verb.

I cut myself while cooking. (I cut my hand, finger, etc.)

Reflexive pronouns end in-self (singular) or-selves (plural).
              singular plural
              myself ourselves
              yourself yourselves
himself / herself / itself themselves

Reflexive pronouns can also be used as adverbs (with “by”)
She has made the cake by herself. (describing “how” – in this case “without any help”)

He prefers to live by himself. (describing “how” – in this case “alone”)

Note: We do not use a reflexive pronoun after verbs which describe things people usually
              do for themselves:

He shaved and dressed quickly by himself.

              She sat down by herself.
I have to get up early by myself.

                            Hey Henrik!
Great to hear that you’re coming to stay in my city – I’m sure you’ll love it!

There are lots of nice hotels here in Buenos Aires, and plenty of people
rent out on Airbnb so both options will be easy to find online. On the
one hand, I think staying in a hotel is the better option as they tend to
be in a more central location and apartments in the center tend to be
more expensive than staying in the suburbs. However, neither will be
very expensive at the moment because there are lots of special offers to
encourage people to visit after the pandemic.

But one important thing to think about is food. If you stay in a hotel, your
breakfast will probably be included, which would be a pity as we have
lots of really great breakfast bars in the city. One of my favorites is Petit
Colon near the theater – I went there the other day with my aunt, and we
both enjoyed the delicious croissants they serve there!

When we travel, my dad prefers to rent an apartment because he says it
feels more comfortable – hotels are sometimes a bit boring, but apartments
often have books or interesting artwork.

                            Buen Viaje!

                  Cultural Celebrations Crossing Borders

One of the joys of traveling the world is exploring new cultures and appreciating the traditions
of different places. But you don’t always need to visit a place to get a taste of their culture. Over
the years, as people have moved to other countries, they’ve taken their traditions with them and
turned them into celebrations in their new home countries. Let’s take a look at three border-
           crossing cultural celebrations.

              Son Jarocho Festival
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
Son Jarocho folk music originated in the Veracruz region of Mexico, with a
group playing string instruments and singing songs with humorous lyrics. In
the town of Tlacotalpan, there’s an annual Son Jarocho Festival in February.
And since 2012, the American city of San Francisco has also held an annual
festival to celebrate this folkloric style of Veracruz, introducing the music to
a wider audience. The music is also often heard in Cuba too, where it was
banned during the 18th century for its lyrics which made fun of the local
           authorities.

                                     Mardi Gras

When you start talking about this celebration, a lot of people think of New
Orleans. People there throw colored necklaces during parades, usually in
purple, green, and gold. Although people think loud music, drinking, and
partying are modern traditions, the origins of the festival were quite similar.
In ancient Rome, it was a celebration of the end of winter. When religious
groups arrived in Rome, they decided it was easier to incorporate the
festival into their calendar rather than try to ban it. And so Mardi Gras, or
Fat Tuesday, became the last day of good food and partying before living
a simpler life over the next forty days.

              Holi

This is also a festival to celebrate the start of spring. Although its origins
are in India, Holi is now celebrated around the world, from Russia to Spain
to Australia. During the celebration, people throw colored powder at each
other, with the colors symbolizing different legends from India. For example,
yellow represents health and happiness, while orange represents forgiveness
           and new beginnings.

Grammar revision of comparatives and superlatives

Let´s see the rules about making comparisons.

              • the comparative form of adjectives
We use the comparative form to compare two people, things, or places. We use the
                 suffix -er with one-syllable adjectives.
                 Gustavo is younger than Marco.
                 Germany is colder than Spain.

We use more before the adjectives that have two or more syllables.
This house is more expensive than that house.

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
We use than after the comparative form of the adjectives in a sentence.
My brother is taller than my father.
Bungee jumping is more dangerous than rafting.

              • the superlative form of adjectives
We use the superlative form to compare one person or thing with the rest of the
                 group it belongs to.
Carlos is the tallest student at school. (He is taller than all the others.)
The Nile is the longest river in the world. (It is longer than all the other rivers.)

We use the suffix -est with one-syllable adjectives and also put the before the
                 superlative form.
This town is the hottest place in the country.

We use the most with words that have two or
                                                        more syllables.
Note: We can use as … as with an adjective to
say that two things are the same, or not as … as
to say that one thing is less than another.
                                    $100
                                             $150
                        $100

                                          $70

her music to reflect her, with more emotional lyrics and a different sound. In 2003, she
won a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for her third album, Try This.

looked like the character of Mr Pink, played by actor Steve Buscemi. While still at school,

houses because their parents thought she was a bad influence.

                     E. In 2000, she started work on her first solo album, Can’t Take Me Home. The album was
incredibly successful and had two Top 10 hits in the USA. She went on tour to promote the
album and was the opening act for one of the biggest boy bands at the time, *NSYNC.

B Read the text. How is math important in stadium design?
Math is all around us, and it’s especially important in C Write equations for the
architecture and structural engineering. For example, following situations.
when a team wants to build a new stadium, they
need to ensure there’s enough space, so they need 1. You’re building a stadium
to work out the area the building will take up, as and have decided to include
well as allowing for access points, parking, and public non-gendered bathrooms. You
transport links. They then use ratios to draw up designs need one bathroom for every
for the building, and their blueprints for the work needs 150 spectators.
to be exact. a) Write an equation where x

One of the largest stadiums in the world is Narendra and y is the total number of
Modi Stadium in India which has a capacity for 132,000 spectators.
spectators and is home to the country’s cricket team. b) How many bathrooms would
For a stadium of that size, architects need to ensure you need for a stadium with a
the structural integrity of the building to ensure that it capacity of 39,000?
              can handle that many people.
                                                                               c) With this ratio, how many
Architects also use math in ensuring health and safety bathrooms would the Narendra

go to the stadium? If there’s an emergency, are there
enough exits which are quick and easy to get to?

All these questions are answered using math.

                     2. You’re building a stadium with a capacity for 1,300 spectators per floor. You need
one emergency exit per 250 people on the ground floor. For health and safety
reasons, for each additional floor you build, the capacity for the emergency exits
                     decreases by 25.

Tristan da Cunha is an island in the South Atlantic, with a population
of around 250 people. It’s a difficult place to get to, and in 2021,
due to the global pandemic, there were only four ships a year,
with a week-long journey to get to the island from Cape Town in
South Africa. There’s a strong sense of community on the island,
which doesn’t get many tourists! On the island’s website, they list
residents’ anniversaries and birthdays, and on the calendar, there
are reminders about when to plant and harvest potatoes.

Siwa Oasis in Egypt is a nine-hour journey from the country’s
capital and almost four hours by car from the nearest airport, but
it’s a spot of incredible beauty for tourists who do make the trip.
It’s an amazing area of palm trees in the middle of the desert,
and there are cool springs with crystal-clear water throughout
the oasis. You can swim in some as well as look out for the local
wildlife, including flamingos and gazelles. For those in search of
adventure, you can take a 4x4 trip into the nearby desert for
                                             some off-road driving.

The area around Tso Moriri Lake is stunning if you can bear a
six-hour journey to get there. Although the nearest major town
is only 220km away, the condition of the roads there means
that you can expect to travel at a maximum of 40 km/h by car
or bus. But this area of the Indian Himalayas is worth the trip
to enjoy the natural beauty of this high altitude lake. At over
4,500m above sea level, you’ll need to pack winter clothes even
if you visit in the summer, as there are likely to be sub-zero
                  temperatures overnight.
Oymyakon is said to be the coldest inhabited place on Earth.
This village in Russia has a population of around 500 people
who have all adapted to life in sub-zero temperatures. In fact,

While not hugely popular with tourists, there are companies which

                              Grammar intensifiers

It is possible to use intensifiers with comparative forms of adjectives. We use intensifiers
before the comparative form of the adjectives.

Canada is far colder than Mexico.
much quite a lot Thomas is slightly shorter than Carlos.
far a great deal This motorbike is much cheaper than the others.
                  slightly a good deal
easily a good bit We use these words as intensifiers with superlative
a lot a fair bit adjectives: easily, by far, much.

According to Wikipedia, India is easily 1 country in the world in terms
of air pollution, with 13 cities in the top 20. And while Beijing is well-known for being a city
of smog, it’s actually slightly 2 than 25 other cities in China. Bamenda

Unfortunately, though, when we look at plastic pollution, China is much 4
than other countries. It is said to produce 27% of the ocean’s plastic pollution, and Asia

waste in 2019, compared to less than 30 million for the rest of the world together.

Who is responsible for protecting the environment?
In recent years, we have become much more aware on a global scale of the need to
protect the environment. This is partly because of the impact that Greta Thunberg had
with her Friday school strikes, which encouraged more young people to become involved
              in the topic.

However, while on the one hand, it is important for young people to learn more about the
climate crisis and how they can take positive steps to be a part of the solution, it is unfair
to expect the youth of the world to take responsibility for solving the issue. Governments
need to be stricter in their environmental policies, and major companies must be forced
to take responsibility for the negative impact of their industry on the globe.

Furthermore, it would be a good idea for more governments to provide motivation for
individuals to take responsibility in doing their part. For example, in some countries, people
can earn money when they recycle or receive incentives from the government to use
              public transport.

On the whole, I believe that we all have a part to play in protecting the environment, but
that more responsibility should be placed on the government and businesses.

                                Animal cruelty around the globe

Animals are a huge part of life for many people around the world: they provide comfort
as pets, they provide food and help us carry out agricultural work, and they are also
incredibly fun to watch. I mean, who hasn't watched a cute cat video on YouTube?

1 and there is still a lot to do to protect our four-legged and feathered friends.
Recently in Greece, a country which has often had problems with cruelty towards abandoned
dogs in the streets, the government introduced a new law to protect animals. People can
be fined between 5,000 and 15,000€ and could also be sent to prison for up to ten years.

2 and for research into new medicine, but since 2013 there is a ban on using
animals to test cosmetics in the EU. Animal rights activists hope that other countries, such

3 after scientists suggested that the Covid-19 virus was transmitted in markets.

                              Grammar question tags

              a. asking question tags
We use question tags to ask for confirmation. They mean something like "Is that right?"
                 or “Do you agree?”
Making a tag is mechanical work. To make a tag (mini question), we use the first
auxiliary (or modal) verb. If there is no auxiliary, we can use do, does, or did. Then a
subject pronoun (instead of the subject of the main clause) follows the auxiliary verb.

With an affirmative sentence, we make a negative tag, and with a negative sentence,
                 we make an affirmative tag.

                           affirmative statement negative tag

                  b. answering question tags
We answer a question tag according to the truth of the situation. The answer should
express the real fact. Question tags aren't real questions; in other words, the questioner
                     already knows the answer.

C Listen again and complete the notes.

              1. It's important to keep your distance as a wild animal may bite you, so it's best to wear
                                .

              2. The animal is probably scared and doesn't know you're trying to .
              3. You should put something over the animal, such as a , or
                                .
              4. This will stop the animal moving around so much, and you'll be able to it
                more easily.

              5. Keep the animal in a place, such as a box with a lid. And remember to
make some so the animal can breathe.
              6. You can often rescue smaller animals yourself and take them to the , but

                     1. If you see an injured baby bird, first you check to see if it has feathers.

                     2. If it doesn't have feathers, I'd putting it back in the nest if you can.
                     3. If you can't see the nest, putting the baby in a small box might If the
parents are close, they'll rescue it.
                     4. If it does have feathers, you'd wait and see if the mom is close as the
bird might be learning to fly.
                     5. My is to take the bird to the vet if it looks seriously injured, rather than
trying to look after it yourself.

                                                The Kraken

            1.

The Kraken is a sea monster and resembles an octopus. In fact, some people believe the
legend of the Kraken may have come from sightings of giant squid, which can grow up
to 15m long. In some stories, it has spikes at the end of its tentacles.

            2.
The story of the Kraken originates in Scandinavia, most likely through Old Norse stories.
In the mid-13th century, it appeared in a text with the author saying it was so large that it
"appeared more like land than a fish." The word Kraken comes from the Norwegian word
            krake, meaning an unhealthy animal.

            3.
There are numerous stories of the Kraken attacking boats and pulling them under the
water. One writer suggested that the Kraken attracted fish to itself to encourage fishermen
to come close for a big catch. In 1782, a French scientist suggested that a giant octopus
had attacked eleven ships which were lost at sea. It was later discovered, though, that
            they sank after a hurricane.

            4.
The Kraken is a popular mythical creature in movies and has appeared in the Pirates of
the Caribbean trilogy and more recently in the third Hotel Transylvania movie. It is one of
the level bosses in the second God of War videogame. The Mazatlán football team in a
coastal city of Mexico also nicknamed their stadium El Kraken.

There are so many great movies about space that it's hard to pick my favorite. Sometimes
the plot involves 1 coming to Earth, for example, Independence Day,
or humans finding life on another 2 as they do in the original Alien
movie. Other times, they focus on the challenges of being an astronaut; for example,
in the film 3 starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, they have
to try and get back on their 4 after a spacewalk goes wrong. Of
course, there are always questions about whether 5 gets the science
right in these more dramatic movies, although most people just watch them just for

How do you wash your hair in space?

As much as we love to watch the scientists on the International Space Station doing incredible
things like spacewalks and repairing machinery in zero gravity, it's also interesting to see what
their day-to-day lives are like and how they deal with some of the everyday activities that
               we find easy.

For example, it's impossible to have a shower in a zero gravity environment, so they have to
use liquid soap to keep clean and a little water to rinse off. They reuse their towels as much
as possible as they can't easily throw them in the washing machine! Any water which isn't
dried up with a towel doesn't just float around the shuttle forever, though; it's collected by the
air conditioning unit, processed, and turned into drinking water. Would you drink the water
you just washed your hair in?
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta

If the thought of drinking that water puts you off, space definitely isn't the place for you as
astronauts also drink their urine after it has been processed into water. You can probably
imagine that astronauts get asked lots of questions about how to use the bathroom in space
as well. There are different devices on the space station and shuttles depending on whether
you need to go number one or number two, but the concept is the same: suction.

There are plenty of other challenges for astronauts as well, although not all may be a
problem while they're off the planet. For example, spending time in zero gravity can affect
astronauts' muscles and bones, and they may be more likely to break a bone when they get
home. They try to avoid any problems by getting lots of exercise in space, as well as eating
a diet which is rich in calcium.

Food is an important part of an astronaut's life, and they have a diet of around 2500 calories
each day. Another issue with zero gravity, though, is that it can affect your sense of taste.
Food often tastes bland, and so many astronauts opt for spicy flavors, such as pepper and
               wasabi.

The main problem is I'm not convinced people I’d argue that space

Today was a difficult day, and I’m really missing my family.

I chatted with them on the video link earlier, and we had a

really good laugh, but after we said goodbye, I just felt so

alone. Although it’s a fantastic experience to be one of the
first people to live on Mars, I wonder if I made the right
decision. I’m only six months into the three-year trip, and

the thought of not being able to hug my dad or hang out
with my friends for the next two and a half years is really

                                getting to me.
I mean, I’ve made friends here, and we all get on quite well.

Last night we all went to Dhruv’s bubble and watched a
movie together, which was fun, but it’s definitely not the

same as being able to call up one of my girlfriends to
                                watch a cheesy rom-com.

I guess things will get better, and I’ve got a chat scheduled
with the project psychologist next week so I can talk to

him about how I’m feeling. I think it’s good that he told us
all to write a diary like this, it’s nice to put things into
words and have a record of the ups and downs.

stuffed animals. Others collect movie ticket stubs; we want to know what you collect.

even bought me a deck with a picture of me on the back, which was a nice

quite professional when I was showing the bottles and saying the names of the
different products. We each rated the colognes out of ten based on their smell
                                – though it’s true that the smell can change when it’s on your body. The two
winners were both well-known brands, but some of the inexpensive ones also
                                got good scores.

find what I want to listen to. I love playing music on my Victrola player, and
I definitely believe the music sounds different to when you play it digitally. I’m
lucky as I’ve got quite a big collection even though I’ve only been collecting for
a year or so, but, I always do my best to keep the records clean, and I make
sure I put them back in the sleeve after listening.

Grammar relative clauses with who, which, that

We use the relative clause to define a person or a thing using relative pronouns
like who, which or that. When we link two sentences to make a relative clause,
we don’t need to use the described person/thing for the second time. Instead, we
use the relative pronouns mentioned above.

That girl is American. She is my next-door neighbor.
That girl who (she) is my next-door neighbor is American.

These pronouns can refer to both the subject (as in the examples above) and the
                          object of the sentence.
The boy is Japanese. I met him last night at the restaurant. (the boy = subject of
                          the sentence)
The boy who I met (him) last night at the restaurant, is Japanese.

I have visited the building. It was built in the 1800s. (the building = object of the
                          sentence)

I have visited the building which was built in the 1800s.

We use who to describe people.
A nurse is a person who looks after patients.
The man who is wearing glasses is my manager.
I have met a man who comes from Mexico.

We use which to describe things or animals.

An oven is a device which bakes, roasts or dries something (especially food).
The room which we have cleaned is empty now.
Tina rents an apartment which is relatively cheap.

We can also use that instead of who and which to describe both people and
                          things.

The student who/that failed the exam became upset.

Is working from home the future?

For years, people have been telling us that there’s no way to prepare children for their future
careers as the jobs they’ll be doing don’t even exist yet. The global pandemic also made us
think about whether the way of working we’ve always considered to be “normal” will still be
the way things are in the future.

During the lockdown, the working life of many people around the world changed radically:
no more grabbing a takeaway coffee on your way to catch an early-morning train; no more
chats around the office water cooler; and while many people try not to take work home,
              now home was work.

Some people enjoyed the ability to work from home: it meant getting up a little later, and
there was always the option of pajama bottoms and a smart shirt on the top half. For others,
it was far from ideal. Some people missed the human connection of the office; others were

trying to manage family life – including homeschooling their children – with trying to work
full-time as well as dealing with their terrible Wi-Fi connection at home.

Unfortunately, working from home wasn’t an option for many people. Hospital workers,
supermarket staff, cleaners and many others continued to work through the pandemic – often
living away from their families to keep them safe.

So what does the future hold? Five years from now, will we all be in our home offices, chatting
on Zoom and sharing documents digitally? Or will we be back in the workplace, laughing and
chatting with our colleagues over a cup of coffee while the boss isn’t watching?

E Complete the sentences. Use 1, 2 or 3 words from the text.

              3. It’s relatively easy for office workers not to but teachers often have things
to do in the evenings and weekends.

                        Grammar defining/non-defining relative clause

                      a. defining relative clauses

A defining relative clause gives necessary information about the noun or noun phrase
it modifies. Without this part, it is unclear to understand which person or thing is being
                        talked about.
Do you know the man who greeted us at the market?
It was a place where you could chat with your friends.

If the relative pronoun is the object of the verb, then it can be omitted:
It was a small electronic pet which/that you fed and took care of.
(which/that can be omitted because it refers to the object of the sentence, a small
                        electronic pet)

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
However, if the relative pronoun is the subject of the verb, then it cannot be omitted:
The TalkBoy was a device which/that used a cassette tape to make recordings.

(which /that cannot be omitted because it refers to the subject of the sentence, The
                        TalkBoy)

                      b. non-defining relative clauses

A non-defining relative clause gives extra information about a noun or noun phrase,
and you need to put this part between two commas in the sentence.
The Tamagotchi, which was first sold in Japan, quickly spread across the world in the
                        mid to late 1990s.
We cannot use the pronoun ‘that’ in non-defining relative clauses, and also relative
                        pronouns cannot be omitted.
It is common to use the non-defining relative clause with proper names (name of
people, cities, etc.) because it isn’t necessary to define these words with a relative
                        clause.
Remember that defining relative clauses are used to give important information,
whereas the non-defining clause gives more details / extra information. That is, a
sentence would have a different meaning without the defining relative clause.

                                                                                              We can use whom
                                                                                              instead of who when
                                                                                              the relative clause
We use whose for people and of which for things in is the object of the
relative clauses instead of possessive adjectives. But sentence.
of which is used in non-defining relative clauses.
This is Samantha, whose brother is a famous singer. This is Samantha,

                            New job!

               Hey!
How’s things? I guess you’re looking forward to the end of term and your summer
vacation, not long now! Everything’s fine here although I have a lot of exams coming
up next month. Have you got many exams at the mo?

               I’ve got some exciting news… remember I said I wanted to get a part-time job so I
could save up for the summer and go on a trip with my friends? I got a job working
in a local store on the weekends! I’ve been there for about a month now, and I’m
really enjoying it although I have to get up early both days as my shift starts at 7 a.m.
(ugh!). But it’s OK because I’m finished by mid-afternoon, so I still have time to hang
out with my friends. You don’t have a part-time job, do you? (I seem to remember
you told me you didn’t, but maybe things have changed now!)

Anyway, the pay isn’t amazing, but I think between now and summer I should be able

to save something. I’m really looking forward to going away with my friends – we’re
thinking of going camping down the coast for a few nights.
What about you? Any plans for the summer?

               Write soon,
               A-M

                    a. prefixes

A prefix is a letter or a group of letters that we add to the beginning of a word. The
word can be an adjective, adverb, noun or a verb. Prefixes change the meanings
of words. For example, the prefix un- can mean not or opposite. Adding un- to the
word comfortable gives you the word uncomfortable, which means not comfortable.

            b. suffixes
A suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word. Suffixes are
commonly used to show the part of speech of a word. For example, the word colorless
consists of the root word color combined with the suffix -less (without); the word
colorless means having no color. Suffixes also tell us the verb tense of words or whether
the words are plural or singular.

Jaime had always loved animals. While his
friends were watching walk-throughs of video
games, he could spend hours watching cute
animals on YouTube. But despite his love for
all things feathered and furry, he’d never had
              a pet himself. MUESTRA EDITORIAL

One day he finished school early and decided
to walk home alongside the canal before lunch.
As he was walking along, something in the
water caught his eye. He moved closer and
saw that it was a puppy that was struggling
to climb up the side to get out of the water.

Jaime immediately bent down and reached to
pull the struggling pup out of the cold water.
The poor thing was tiny and shivering, so he
took off his hoodie and wrapped the pup
up. He raced home and found a cardboard
box for the puppy, then started looking for
YouTube videos for advice about what to do.

When Jaime’s family saw the poor pup wrapped in a towel in the cardboard box, they
all immediately fell in love with her and decided to keep her. Jaime decided to name
her Poppy, as there had been a clump of poppies growing next to the spot in the canal
he had rescued her from. With Poppy in his life, Jaime felt complete, and the two were
              inseparable from that day on.

                                                     Refraction

Light waves travel in a 1 line. However, when light moves from one
transparent media to another, it can appear to 2 . This is because light
moves more 3 through the air than through some other substances.

For example, when a ray of light travels from the air into a material with a higher
4 , such as water or glass, the ray changes direction. This is also why the
pencils appear to be 5 in the image above and why the black lines are
                distorted.

When we talk about refraction, we imagine an invisible line at a 6 to the
boundary between media. This is called the normal. The denser the media, the more the
light will bend toward the normal. The angle of 7 is the angle between
the normal and the ray in the media. As well as bending pencils, refraction can cause
other optical illusions, such as completely changing the 8 of an arrow.

                  C. Project Optical illusions

Content: hypothesize what changes will occur because of refraction
Learning outcome: identify how density and distance affect refraction
Evidence of learning: a presentation on your experiments
                     For this project:
√ work in a group of four

√ read the directions below and write your hypothesis
√ carry out the two experiments
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
√ write a presentation explaining what you did and your results

                           Experiment 1

                       1. Fill a glass two-thirds with water. Put a pencil in the water and calculate the angle
                          of refraction.
                       2. You’re going to pour vegetable oil into the glass on top of the water. Write your
hypothesis: how do you think the density of the two media will affect refraction?

                       3. Remove the pencil from the water and add some oil. Leave it to settle, and then
put the pencil into the glass again. What do you notice? Comment on what has
                          happened and why.

                           Experiment 2

                       1. Draw an arrow, approximately 5cm long, pointing right on a piece of paper. Fill a
                          glass with water.
                       2. You’re going to put the paper directly behind the glass and move it away from
the glass until the arrow flips and points to the left. Write your hypothesis: at what
distance from the glass do you think the arrow will flip?

                       3. Carry out the experiment and measure the distance when the arrow flips. Comment
                          on why this happens.
                       4. You’re going to try the same experiment with glasses of different shapes and sizes.
Write your hypothesis: how do you think shape and size will affect the distance?
                       5. Carry out the experiment and comment on your findings.
