              Reading

A Read the questions and discuss them with a partner.
                 1. Can you explain why you like a particular character in a book?
                 2. If you could change the ending to a book you have read, how would it end?

                 3. What do you think would be the difficulties involved in writing a story?
Read the text and answer questions 1 to 3.

So, You’re Going to Write a Story
There are many things to decide when writing a story, such as; setting, plot, characters, conflict and
theme. While new authors might think the starting point is one of these, the one at the top of the
list is selecting which readers the story is aimed at because this will affect the structure of the story.
The author needs to think about the age and gender of the reader. Is the audience going to be
narrowed to young adults or be wider? Once this decision is made then the next step is to see which
authors and genres are popular with that group of people, so bringing us to the next part of the
process before any writing begins! This, is to read books in that genre so that you can see which
topics have been overdone and find something more unique. The would-be author can also learn
what the reader expects of and likes about that genre and make sure to include these features in
              their own book.
Finding the idea or “seed” for the book is probably the most difficult part of the process but there
are lots of ideas out there. The author could take something from their own life, such as an important
memory, or they can find ideas online. These are mostly prompts which help out with finding a topic.
Conflicts are a key element in stories. Kurt Vonnegut spoke of two types; “Man in the Hole” and “Boy
Meets Girl”. In the first, someone gets into trouble and tries to get out of it and in the second, a
character has something, loses it and then tries to get it back. The conflicts are what push the main
character to reach their goal. They are important because the reader needs a reason to care if the
goal is reached. This is what makes your story a page-turner.

This brings us to the creation of the main character.
What is their main goal and why? How will the
character develop during the story and how will they
change? If the character does not change at all,
then this is called a “static” character. These changes
are not physical but are inside the character. These
could be changes in the way they see something,
their point of view, their understanding of a situation
or person. A main character who does not change
may be deliberately designed to contrast with a
more complex or complicated character who does
develop; a “dynamic” character. Some might find
it surprising that an important consideration is the
character’s name. The meaning behind the name
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
gives the reader a lot of clues to what the character
is like. If you are not very familiar with your setting,
place and time, then you can find name generators
online which give the meaning of names in a number
                  of languages.

                   2. If you could change one negative effect of tourism, what would it be? Why?
                   3. What comes to your mind when you hear the term ‘’ecotourism’’?

Read the text and answer questions 1 to 3.

Can Ecotourism Help Protect the Environment?

Tourism will always have significant effects on popular touristic destinations. Sometimes its effects can
be sound, but they are primarily negative. For instance, when a significant number of people visit a
particular place, they can cause harm to the environment. The question is, "how can we diminish the
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
disadvantages of tourism without preventing people from travelling and visiting places?" At this point,
ecotourism is pretty beneficial. The primary purpose of ecotourism is to reduce the adverse effects
that tourism has on the environment visited and the local people living in that environment. The idea
is to encourage travellers to think about what they do when visiting a place, and it's always a good
idea to talk about protecting the environment.

Regarding this, there are several critical points
that tourists should pay attention to. For example,
tourists shouldn't drop litter in the streets, and
they should obey the rules of the places they
visit. They shouldn't interfere with wildlife. They
should respect local people and their traditions.
However, is it always possible to stick to all
these rules while travelling? People have different
opinions regarding this issue. Some people think
ecotourism causes too much conflict. They say
that any tourism needs infrastructure such as
roads, airports and hotels. The more tourists
visit a place, the more these infrastructures are
required. By building more of these, you can't
              avoid harming the environment.
Whereas, naturally, things aren't always so
black and white. Living in a place of natural
beauty doesn't mean that you shouldn't benefit
from advantages like better roads and other
opportunities. And ecotourism is observed to
make things more convenient. As long as the
improvements benefit both the local people and
the travellers, and the local communities are
consulted on plans and changes, then tourism
may cause more good than harm.

Benefits of Medication on Body and Mind

Medication is a mind and body practice which
has many benefits for health. It increases
calmness and physical relaxation by improving
psychological balance as it copes with diseases and enhances health and overall well-being. You
can practice meditation easily as all you need to practice meditation is a quiet place, a comfortable
posture such as sitting and lying down, a focus of attention and an open attitude of letting distractions
              come and go naturally.
Meditation can become a part of people’s lives in different ways and is often practised to gain
balance in people’s physical, emotional and mental states.
When practised regularly, meditation can provide a deep rest, and as a result, it can enable people
to make better choices, work better through the day and sleep better at night. Meditation has also
been applied to help people get rid of addictions such as smoking and alcohol. One of the most
significant benefits of meditation is releasing stress from people’s bodies. When people’s bodies are
suddenly exposed to high-stress levels, they may respond to them with a sudden reaction caused
by an adrenaline rush that they cannot control. However, if people can confront things and increase
their ability to cope with things, they can reduce their stress levels and react more calmly. At this point,
meditation can be beneficial. For example, related to this form of stress, a recent study revealed that
meditation helped university students decrease their level of psychological distress and increase their
ability to cope with it. Such students are also at risk of developing diseases like hypertension. If they
apply meditation in the long term and regularly, it may help them decrease their blood pressure.
It seems that meditation can have various benefits on the human brain, mainly when applied in the
long term, because it helps develop the areas of the brain that regulate emotions. Regarding all
these benefits, meditation is becoming more popular each day. More people are starting to take
up meditation, and more doctors are prescribing it as they observe the clear benefits it provides on
              physical and mental health.

On the Buy Nothing Day, people organise different types of protests and cut up their credit
cards. The Buy Nothing groups organise events to exchange and repair items they already have
and use. The trend has now reached influencers on social media as well. These people have a
great number of followers as they usually share posts of clothes that they recommend for them
to buy. Another important example of this movement is that, two friends in Canada spent a year
working only for buying food. For the first quarter of the year, they learned to live without buying
electrical goods and clothes. They gave up eating out at restaurants for the following months. As
a result, they saved a great amount of money in one year.
The changes in these two different groups of people had good results. The amount of using
plastic and paper packaging decreased and it had a positive effect on the environment. If
everyone followed a similar plan, the results would be effective all around the world. Even if you
can't spend a whole year without going shopping, you can take

                                                The Sweet History of Chocolate

Most people think that chocolate is something sweet to eat and can be easily found in stores
around the world. What if you learned that chocolate was once very valuable? The delicious
secret of the cacao tree was discovered almost two thousand years ago in the rainforests of
America. Researchers of the past believe the Mayan people of Central America first discovered
cacao plants and learned to farm them. They cooked the seeds of cacao trees, turned them into
a soft paste, and mixed this paste with water and spices to prepare a chocolate drink. Cacao
and chocolate were an essential part of Maya culture during those times. Wealthy families drank
chocolate at special ceremonies. The Aztec culture in today’s Mexico also gave importance to
chocolate. However, it was impossible to grow cacao trees in the area where the Aztecs lived
because of the climate, so they exchanged goods to get cacao. They even used cacao seeds
to pay their taxes as a form of money. Chocolate also played an essential role in the Mayan
and Aztec ceremonies in temples and churches. Priests offered cacao seeds to the gods and
served chocolate drinks during these ceremonies. In the 1500s, cacao was brought to Europe by

the explorer Christopher Columbus. He brought cacao seeds to Spain after his journey to Central
America in 1502. Then, Spain began planting cacao in its colonies in America. The rich people
of Spain first enjoyed a sweetened kind of chocolate drink. Later, chocolate became more well-
known all around Europe. And during the Industrial Revolution, new technologies helped make
                  chocolate less expensive.
Today, farmers grow cacao trees in many countries in Africa and Central and South America.
However, growing cacao means hard work for farmers. It takes a long time and a lot of effort
to produce chocolate from cacao seeds in factories because it is a complicated kind of work.
Workers must clean and cook the chocolate seeds. Then, they have to get rid of the covering
of the seeds so that only the inside fruits remain. Workers produce chocolate liquor from these
fruits. Producers of chocolate have their unique recipes. They mix chocolate liquor with certain
amounts of sugar, milk and cacao fat. Then, they mash their it to make smooth chocolate.
Chocolate making is a challenging business. The market value of the annual cacao crop is more

than five billion dollars around the world. Chocolate is especially sold and liked mostly in Europe
and America. For example, in 2005, America bought nearly one and a half billion dollars worth of
cacao products. Americans eat an average of more than five kilograms of chocolate per person
every year. Special chocolate shops which sell expensive chocolates are also trendy. Many of
these shops offer chocolate lovers the chance to taste chocolates made of cacao grown in
                  different regions of the world.

was announced in 2007, and the public from around the world chose their favourites. The seven
most popular places became the world's new wonders as a result of the voting. Below are the
              places on the list.
The Great Wall of China is a series of walls built over 500 years ago in northern China. It is the
longest wall in the world and is absolutely a wonderful sight. It was built to protect China and
its trade routes. Because of natural landslides and human damage, thirty per cent of the Great
              Wall has disappeared.
The Christ the Redeemer statue stands on Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The
figure stands 30 meters tall, and its arms are 28 meters wide. The statue is one of Brazil's most
recognisable symbols. It is also a symbol of Christianity that attracts millions of visitors every year.
The Colosseum in Rome, Italy, was built between 72AD and 96AD during the power of King
Vespasian and King Titus. The site stood 187m long and 155m wide. During Roman times, it was
the biggest entertainment arena. It was used explicitly for gladiatorial races. Gladiators were
mainly known to be criminals or prisoners of war and almost died in the arena in front of huge
crowds. Today, the ruins of the Colosseum attract millions of visitors every year.
Machu Pichu, built on a mountain ridge in Peru, was built for King Pachucuti between 1438 and
1472. Researchers believe it was a ceremonial city. Machu Pichu attracts the attention of many
different people and is frequently voted as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the
world. Recently, new rules have begun to be applied to protect the ruins from further damage
              due to tourism.
Petra, in Jordan, is built on sandstone. Therefore, it is also known as the 'Rose City’. A Swiss
explorer discovered this lost city in 1812, and today, new tombs and caves are still found in the
area. Petra was known to benefit from the silks of China and the spices of India. It was an
              important centre for trade.

Have you ever taken an active part in any voluntary work? Volunteering means a lot for
those who do their best to help and support people in need of any kind of help. People and
organisations that do voluntary work are far more common than known. Each country has an
important number of people who take care of others by doing voluntary work. For instance, many
high school and university students organise their daily routines well and spend time in hospitals,
orphanages or homes for the elderly voluntarily. They read books, watch movies, help with their
daily needs or do some shopping for the people in these places. Sometimes the students only
visit them, play games with them or listen to their problems, trying to find solutions. Some young
volunteers work in the homes of sick or older adults. They clean up their houses, cook their meals,
do their shopping and do some other daily housework for them. These volunteers mention that
this kind of work has been the most pleasing experience of their lives as they have been able
to be helpful to others. They also believe that volunteer work helps them improve themselves in
              various ways.

                                                    What Is a Solar Cooker?

Have you ever heard about ‘’cooking with the sun’’, that is, solar cooking? It is a useful and recent
invention with many advantages. Solar cooking is becoming popular in some parts of the world,
especially in extremely hot climates. So, how is it possible to cook in the sun? Solar cookers work
well because sunlight carries a lot of power. In a solar cooker, sunlight is concentrated in a
cooking area which gets hot enough to cook food. Some solar cookers even have an insulated
cooking chamber which keeps the heat inside. It is possible to make many different types of solar
cookers. Some cookers can even be small enough to fold into backpacks, like stovetops and
more. Also, different types of solar cookers are used differently. For example, a parabolic solar
cooker prepares food by heating a pan or pot to a high temperature.
A box cooker is most useful when used like a crock-pot which means slow cooking or cooking
with low heat for a long time. To explain how the simple box cooker prepares food more clearly,
think of a hot and sunny summer day in Texas when the temperature can reach around 50
degrees. The simple box cooker will cook or bake most foods on such a day. It will cook the
food slowly, and slow cooking makes the food more delicious. Expect to cook food in this solar
cooker for twice as long as a traditional oven. It is almost impossible to burn food when you

cook your food in this type of cooker, so cooking time does not matter. People who use solar
box cookers mostly prepare their dishes, put them in the cooker, and go away until ready to eat.
In general, solar cookers cook more easily on sunny days and when the sun is high. Even when
the sky is partly cloudy, they can still cook food. However, environmental conditions can change
how well a solar cooker cooks food. Some conditions that could change it negatively can be
                  heavy rainfall and air pollution.
It is also possible to build your box cooker as a simple box cooker can be made in a couple of
hours with some basic materials. If you are more serious about cooking than making your solar
cooker, ready-made solar cookers are available and have become easier to find recently. Many
of them can match traditional ovens in performance and, at the same time, can save a lot of
                  energy.
