How’s things? Sorry, I haven’t written for ages – I had loads of exams to study for…argh! But
                       I’m free now, ha-ha!
Anyway, I want to tell you about a new mall that’s opening next week here. I’m really excited
because it has a ginormous arcade, with VR games. I’m going with my friends because they’re
gaming nerds too. So we’ll play some games and then grab a burger in the food court.
How often do you go shopping? Who with? Where’s your nearest mall? What do you do there?

                                       How is Life Different Now?

In 2020, we talked to three teens about life during the global pandemic and
how things are different for them now.

School starts at 7:30 a.m. here, but now we have classes online, I can get up later!
In the morning, I sometimes go for a walk with my mom. She says it’s important
to go outside and get some vitamin D from the sun. I have breakfast and help to
clean the house before class starts. At the moment, we’re only having three lessons
a day, from 10:30 to 1:30. Then I have lunch with my family. I’m spending more time
with my family now because I can’t go out to see my friends. We’re watching an
Indian show called Ramayana and playing Ludo a lot too.

                       Geisi, 13 (Venezuela)
Because I’m at home now, I’m helping my mom around the house a lot. Sometimes
I help her cook lunch or do laundry. We don’t get water in our house, so every day
I usually go with my brother and my grandmother to collect it. I don’t have a lot
of time to do school work, and at the moment, we don’t have internet at home, so
I don’t go to online classes.

                       Charlotte, 16 (Germany)

I live with my mom and dad, two brothers and a sister, and it’s difficult being at
home all the time. I sometimes meet up with my friend, Hayato, and we go for a
long walk and talk about life. Our teachers are giving us work to do at home, and
my mom doesn’t want us to spend a lot of time on our phones or on the internet,
so we do a lot of things to help out at home: gardening or cleaning.

There are lots of things you can do to relax, and some people find doing one activity
works better for them than another activity.
For example, some people love reading in their free time. On the one hand, reading
is very good for you as you can learn new words, and if you have a good imagination,
a book can help you escape the stresses of life. However, some people can find it
difficult to find some quiet to read, especially if they have a big family or share a room
                with a brother or sister.
Listening to music is also an option to help you relax. You can use headphones, and
it’s an activity you can do anywhere and at any time of the day. But it’s important to
choose your music carefully because if you listen to fast music, it might not help you
                relax.

To sum up, reading and listening are both good ways to relax. Personally, I prefer
to read because I can get lost in another world and it helps me forget about my
                problems.

                     2. What aspects of social media do you think the text talks about?

The Emotional Damage of Social Media

A study from the UK shows that more and more people are creating a social media
presence while they are still in primary school. Most social media apps, such as Instagram
and YouTube, say users must be at least 13 years old, but the report shows that 78% of
the under-13s asked, use at least one app regularly.
Most primary schools teach internet safety, but there are a lot of concerns about young
people using social media. For example, people can become addicted to "likes", and when
they follow famous stars who get thousands of likes per post, they can feel depressed.
Another problem is online bullying. The report shows that one in five people aged 10-12
have experienced bullying through social media and over a third say they have seen
                       others being bullied.
Not all problems are related to underage use of social media. Some young people, who
don't have their own social media accounts, can experience "sharenting". Parents often
share photos of their children online, but they should ask for their children's permission to
share anything. Remember a funny photo of you at age four will still be there ten years
                       later.

                                                     conjunctions: cause and result

We use certain conjunctions as, because, since and so to show cause and result. See
                       the examples below:

                         a. result + conjunction (as, because, since) + cause
I put on my coat as it was cold outside.

I put on my coat since it was cold outside.

We can also change the order of the sentences using the conjunctions above.

                         b. conjunction (as, because, since) + cause, + result
Because it was cold outside, I put on my coat.

Since it was cold outside, I put on my coat.
As it was cold outside, I put on my coat.

                         c. cause + conjunction (so) + result
It was cold outside, so I put on my coat.

Content: to use trigonometry functions in game design
Learning outcome: to calculate distances and angles
Evidence of learning: plotted diagrams and calculations using Pythagoras Theorem and
                     trigonometric functions
                     For this project: You’ll need:
√ Work in a pair √ grid paper

Problem 1 - Identify the distance

In this first game, you know that your character can always score if
                                       they’re 4.25m from the hoop.

Show your calculations and mark the position of the player at a 30º and
                                       65º angle from the hoop.

Problem 2 - Identify the angle

In this second game, your tank needs to turn to shoot an at
                                                     the enemy satellite tower.

Plot the two points onto a grid and use Pythagorean
Theorem to calculate the distance between them.

Then, use a trigonometric function to identify the angle your
tank needs to turn to shoot.

Problem 3 - Identify the angle

In the final game, different targets pop up one after the
other, each 7m away from you.
Use the same process as in problem 1, but remember that
to shoot baddie B, you’ll need to calculate the angle from
your position facing baddie A. Then to shoot baddie C,
you’ll have to calculate the angle from your position facing
                                                     baddie B.

Are You Addicted to the Internet?

When the first thing you do in the morning is logging into your social media account, there’s
a problem. With all the big problems online teens face online – such as cyberbullying and
sexual predators – it’s easy to forget that there are other serious disadvantages to the
              digital world.

It can be very difficult for people to switch off their phones and take a break from
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
notifications that pop up constantly - #FOMO (fear of missing out) is becoming a real issue
for lots of teens. For example, there was a teen in the US who was spending up to 7 hours
a day online, and as a result, she started getting bad grades at school. When her parents
took away her device, she said she was going to leave home.

Internet addiction can affect anyone. In the case of the girl above, she was popular and
spent her time chatting online with a boy she liked, posting to Facebook and catching up
with friends. Other times, it can affect more isolated individuals, people who find it difficult
to talk to others in real life but enjoy chatting to online friends and connecting in the virtual
              world.

Either way, it’s important to deal with internet addiction as it can have serious effects on
              your physical and mental health.

F Read the text and answer the questions.
              1. What problems of being online does the text mention? Can you think of any others?
              2. How did the girl in the US react when her parents stopped her internet access?

              3. What different types of people can internet addiction affect?
              4. How do you think internet addiction might affect someone physically and mentally?

Grammar imperatives / active vs. non-active verbs

We use imperatives to express many things like rules, commands, wishes, advice or
warnings. Negative forms of imperatives are often used to talk about prohibitions.

                       Stand up! - command
                       Take a seat. – suggestion
Have a nice day. – wishes
Do not park here. – rule/prohibition

                                   Leilia Adzhametova

Leilia Adzhametova was born in the Ukraine in September 1994. She started doing
athletics when she was 11 because she watched her friends doing athletics and got
interested in the sport. She started competing internationally at events in Switzerland and

Germany and then represented her country at the Rio Paralympics in 2016. She was in the
T13 classification which is for athletes in various sports, such as athletics and swimming,
               who are visually impaired.

At first, she trained to run shorter races: 100m and 200m. Then, before she went to Rio,
she started to train for 400m. She said that was a challenge because she needed to learn
how to run a longer race. But she learnt well because she won a bronze medal in the
400m race in Rio. In the 100m race there, she ran incredibly fast and won a gold medal,
as well as getting a new world record in the women's 100m.

Leilia is very close to her family and says that her grandma inspired her to be the best. As
a fan of boxing, she was very impressed by Vasyl Lomachenko's 2018 fight against Jorge
Linares from Venezuela. The Ukrainian hurt his shoulder badly at the start of the fight, but
he didn't give up, and he won the match.

We use the simple past tense to talk about states or actions that happened and finished
                     in the past.
We generally use the suffix -ed after the main verb in the simple past tense. However,
when the main verb is an irregular one, then the past form of this verb must be used.

                                                               through exercise?

The idea of combining a stationary bike and a generator is nothing new. In the 1970s,
there was a scientist named Colin Kerr, who designed a pedal-powered generator. His
daughter remembers that when she wanted to watch TV after school, she had to start
               cycling!

And in 2010, in a hotel in Denmark, there was a project for a year with a similar idea.
Guests in the hotel could ride a stationary bike, and when they generated 10 watt-hours
of electricity, they got a $36 voucher to spend in the hotel restaurant.

The same year, there was a story about a sheriff in Arizona who made prisoners cycle
to watch TV. He saw that a lot of people in jail were overweight and he thought it was
a good way to motivate them to exercise.

Nowadays, Indian-American Manoj Bhargava, founder of Billions in Change, is helping
people around the world to generate their own electricity with his electric bikes. For
families living in poorer, rural areas, sixty minutes of pedaling can produce enough
electricity for their house for a day.

                                        other rooms had them.

We stayed on a rice farm on our last vacation. It was
wonderful because there wasn’t any traffic and there were lots
of beautiful places to walk. It was a nice change to being in
                                        Bangkok, which is really noisy!

In the summer, I stayed at my grandma's house for three weeks because my parents were
working. My grandma lives on the coast, and most days I went to the beach. I had a really
good time in the water, swimming and bodyboarding. We usually packed a picnic for lunch,
and sometimes we had ice cream in the afternoon.

One day we went shopping and went to a little café for lunch. I bought a fridge magnet for
my friend because he collects them and I got a new T-shirt too.
I was a bit sad when my dad came to pick me up because I really liked spending every day
at the beach, but it was fun to go back home and see my friends again.

              an experiment to create renewable
energy using water. Before you read,
match these words to their definitions.

                          fuel • molecule

                a) something you can use to create power, like gas in a car
                b) something you use to make a chemical reaction happen more quickly
                c) a unit of a chemical
                d) something produced in a chemical reaction that you don't need

                e) products like coal which come from the ground

Daniel Nocero, a professor of energy at Harvard University (USA), is trying to solve the
world's energy crisis by creating a renewable energy source we can all use at home. He
wanted to apply the same idea behind photosynthesis to create hydrogen, which could
               be used as fuel.

He created an artificial leaf with special catalysts on it. One side of the leaf has cobalt
which attracts oxygen molecules, and the other side has nickel which attracts hydrogen
molecules. When you put the artificial leaf in water (H O) and add a light source, the
                                                                           2
               hydrogen and oxygen molecules separate.
There are already cars that use hydrogen as fuel, and the only by-product is water. This

means they are much better for the environment as they use less fossil fuels and produce
less pollution. Scientists estimate that if they could reproduce this experiment on a bigger
scale, the average US family would need just two gallons of water a day to produce
enough energy for their house. And in places where they use a lot less electricity, they'd
probably only need three glasses of water to produce the power they need.

Sarah Scott was a high school student who was reading aloud in class when she
suddenly felt sick and realized she couldn't speak. At the time, she didn't feel scared,
but the next thing she knew, all of her classmates were standing around her.

They took Sarah to the hospital and did some tests. At just 18 years old, Sarah had
suffered a stroke. She was in the hospital for a long time, with different doctors
and specialists helping her. A common problem after a stroke is aphasia – having
trouble using and understanding language. Aphasia doesn't affect your intelligence, but
sometimes people can think it does because it takes you longer to make sentences or
                       to read things.

At first, Sarah couldn't speak at all. She couldn't say her name or her age. This really
affected her life, and she felt isolated because there were things she couldn't do. She
couldn't chat with her friends and, because she couldn't read or write, she couldn't use
                       social media.

After five years, Sarah could communicate well, but she had problems doing some
activities. For example, it was difficult for her to describe a picture because there were
                       some words she couldn't remember.

Nowadays, Sarah doesn't go to a speech therapist, but she meets up with other
people who have aphasia because it helps to talk to others. During the pandemic, she
was working online and using video-conferencing to chat with her family, friends, and
colleagues, like many of us around the world.

We asked you to write about your funniest travel stories. Here are our favorite three so far…

I went to Córboba last year with my school, and on one of the days, we were allowed to
spend some time in the city on our own. My friend and I decided to go sightseeing, so we
looked up online what places we could visit.
When we left the hotel, we started walking towards the river because it said the museum was
near there. We were walking for ages, and I was sure we were lost, which we kind of were.

It turns out I was looking at a map of Córdoba in Mexico, not Córdoba in Spain!
                   - Thérese, 14 (France)

A couple of years ago, I went on a week-long trip to an adventure camp with my school.
It was my first time away from my family, and on the first day, I was feeling really homesick.
One of the camp helpers saw that I was unhappy, and she suggested we go for a walk
around the camp to see what activities my friends were doing. When we were walking
through the forest, she suddenly put her hand up to be quiet and pointed to a tree. A koala
was sitting in the tree, eating leaves! It was really great to see, and I took a photo so I could
show my family when I got home.
                   - Mark, 13 (Australia)

When we went on holiday last year, my mum was telling us every five minutes, “Put on
sunscreen, or you’ll burn!” whether we were playing at the beach or walking around the city.
Anyway, we were really good and didn’t get sunburnt once until the last day. We went to the
train station to get the train home, but it was delayed for a few hours because of a problem
on the track. So we went to a nearby café for lunch. We were sitting at a table outside for
a couple of hours before we got the train and, when we were sitting on the train, and we
took our sunglasses off, we saw we all had red cheeks and noses!

You/We/They were working at the office last weekend.

We use the past form of the verb to be (was/were) and then add the suffix –ing to the
main verb to form an affirmative sentence in the past continuous tense.
We use past continuous tense to express continuing past actions at a specific time in the
                  past.
I was cleaning my room two hours ago.

              c. past simple tense vs. past continuous tense
We use the simple past tense to express completed actions in the past; however, past
continuous tense refers to an action in progress in the past.
I went to bed early yesterday. (The action went happened in a short time and also
              completed in the past.)
I was sleeping at 10 pm yesterday. (The action sleep lasted longer in the past.)

We often use these two tenses together.
The kids were playing in the garden when I arrived home.

In the sentence above, we see that the verb play is the background action, and the verb
              arrive interrupts it.
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
However, when we use at least two simple past sentences together, the meaning
              changes. Compare two sentences below:

When I arrived home, they had lunch.
(First I arrived, and then they had lunch.)

When I arrived home, they were having lunch.
(They had already started lunch before I arrived.)

Note: Remember that state verbs are not used in the past continuous tense.
I wasn’t remembering her address when you asked me.
                             didn’t remember

Frequently used conjunctions with the past simple and past continuous tenses:

                   when + simple past tense

                   as soon as +

                   while + past continuous tense

When I met her, Laura was having coffee with her friends.
(also: Laura was having coffee with her friends when I met her.)
As soon as he noticed the police officer, the thief ran away.
(also: The thief ran away as soon as he noticed the police officer.)
While we were washing the windows, they were doing the laundry.
(also: They were doing the laundry while we were washing the windows.)

If you’re bored at home this weekend and like binge-watching something, here are our
top three recommendations for a super Saturday!

If you’re a fan of superhuman teens, Cloak and Dagger is the series for you. From the
Marvel universe comes a show which follows Tyrone and Tandy as they learn to live with
their new superpowers and save New Orleans.

Or perhaps you’re in the mood for something a bit more easy-going? In that case, Bunk’d
is for you. It’s the story of three siblings at a summer camp who deal with teen romances
and the day-to-day challenges of making new friends. In earlier episodes, you can see
Skai Jackson, a Disney superstar who’s now the voice of Summer in the animated series
               Dragons: Rescue Riders.

Do you prefer watching spooky shows? If you’re keen on the supernatural, check out the
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina which follows everyone’s favorite teenage witch as she
tries to balance life as a witch with being a teen.

                       Grammar wh-questions in the past

                     a. used to
We can use used to to talk about things that happened in the past but don’t happen
anymore. See the structure of used to below:

+ I / She / They used to eat a lot of junk food?

                         - I / She / They didn’t use to

? Did you use to eat a lot of junk food?

Notice that used to works as a past verb; we don’t need to add –ed to it in negative

Used to is used with past habits (both states and actions) that don’t happen now. In
other words, we can’t use it for things that still happen.
My family used to live in a village when I was a child. (Now they don’t.) – past action

My grandfather used to have a big car when he was in Germany. (Now he doesn’t.) –
                     past stative verb

She used to be a famous singer when she was young. (Now she isn’t.) – past state

We can use used to to talk about repeated past actions. We often use frequency
adverbs and certain time expressions like always, every…, etc.
Gustavo used to play soccer with his friends every Friday when he was at school.
(He did it regularly in the past, now he doesn’t.)

                     b. expressing ability in the past
To talk about past abilities, we usually use could. Could can be used to express both
general abilities and a particular situation.

Victor could read and write when he was only three. (general ability)
I could find my dictionary under my desk. (a specific situation)

We also prefer could to talk about a specific situation in the past when we use the verbs
such as, see, hear, feel, smell, taste, remember, believe, understand, decide, etc.

I could see the difference then.
                     She could understand me better.

Remember that we use the bare form (V1) after the modal verbs expressing ability in the
past as they are themselves formed in the past form.

                                                                                       Unit 9 - Student Book 113

Our teacher asked us to nominate a book to read as a class next term. I have two
favorite books which are very different, so, at first, it was difficult to decide. The first
book is Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman, and the other is a more recent
book called One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus.

One of the things I like about Noughts and Crosses is that it’s a modern version of
the typical Romeo and Juliet story, but with a bit of a science fiction twist. In the
story, people are either Crosses – people with power – or Noughts, who are there to
serve. It’s a really good series of books because it looks at the inequality in society,
which is an important topic nowadays.

On the other hand, One of Us is Lying takes a group of five very different teens and
puts them in detention together, where one of them is murdered! It’s a really exciting
story, and I really love stories like that where you get to be a detective.

In the end, though, I went for the love story
because even though it’s sci-fi, I think it has
more realistic themes than the other one.

D Choose two books from your group’s
class library and write a comparative
text to say which you prefer. You should:

√ find out about the story if you haven’t
                       read the book
√ think about the positive aspects of both
                       books
                     √ explain your final choice

                     √ write 100 – 120 words
√ check your spelling and grammar
