                                                A Fun Train Journey

Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
Travelling by train always sounded interesting to my family and me. So, we decided to take the
train to Manchester for a short summer break. Manchester is one of my favourite cities, and we
all enjoyed the journey. Of course, flying by plane is faster, but I don’t think it is easier, because
there is a lot of security and waiting in lines at airports. We felt tired in the middle of the night.
Then, we got on the train. “We’re moving,” my son Edward shouted happily. The train began to
        pull away from the station.
I took off my shoes and lay down to have a good night’s sleep. The sleeper car was not so
comfortable, but the ordinary train seats were not bad. An airline flight is a more difficult
experience for me. There is not enough room. It is two hours of pain with my knees almost
touching my chin. The hard seatback in front is painful for my legs. On the train, I can outstretch
all my body in the generous legroom.
The journey didn’t feel so long. We found the train ride joyful. Riding in the car for hours is always
painful. On the train, you can walk around. You can sit and enjoy the views from the windows.
You can have a nice meal in the dining car, read a book, or play a board game.
So, the train is all about enjoying the trip. I don’t enjoy my trip when I travel by airline or car.
Manchester offers many fun activities for a family. This time, getting there by train was half the
        fun.

                                                  My Lovely Family

My family and I live in a house near the seaside. I have got two brothers and one sister, and I
have a very good relationship with all of them. My father teaches history at Central High School
downtown, and my mother is a doctor at a big hospital. My brothers are very clever and work
hard at school. My sister is a bit of a selfish girl, but she is always very polite to everyone. My
grandmother and grandfather also live with us. They came from Spain when I was three years old.
They have grown old, but they are still very strong and active. My grandmother cooks the best
food! She cooks delicious meals, and her desserts are especially delicious. I love her cheesecakes.
She loves baking various cheesecakes for us. They are all so yummy! My grandfather helps us
with everything at home. He takes care of our garden all the time. He loves gardening, planting
new flowers in the garden and taking care of them regularly. He also takes our dog, Max, for
walks every morning and evening. Max loves him and my grandmother so much. My family is very
important to me. We do lots of things together. We share all our happiness and our problems
with one another. My brothers and I like going on long walks at the seaside. My sister enjoys
cooking with my grandmother. She loves trying her recipes on her own when she doesn’t have
a lot of homework. On the weekends, we all play outdoor games, for example, hide and seek
and board games, for example, chess and checkers. We laugh a lot when we are all together.
We always have a wonderful time. I love my family very much. They mean everything to me, and
they are always there for me.

        Dear Jessica,
Hi! My name is Roberta. I am your new pen pal. I’m sixteen years old. I live in Rome, Italy. Rome
is a great city. There are a lot of beautiful and interesting places to see. There are also a lot of
important historical sites to visit. I go to the 10th grade at Saint Martin High School. On weekdays,
I get up at quarter past six. The school starts at half past eight in the morning. I have lunch at
the school cafeteria, and I usually have healthy food for lunch. The chef at the school cafeteria
cooks delicious and nutritious meals for us. I always leave school around 3:30 in the afternoon. I
am good at math and languages, English and French, but I am bad at music classes. I also like
history and science, but my favourite subject is geography because I like learning about different
parts of the world. I like reading and doing research about different countries. I like playing
basketball and tennis. I also play volleyball, and I love swimming. I go to the movie theatre with
my friends on Saturdays or Sundays. We like animations and comedy films. I generally stay at
home with my parents on Sundays. We have a late breakfast in the morning, spend the day
doing fun activities together and cook dinner together. We have a big family dinner on Sunday
evenings. Family time is very important for us.
Please write soon and tell me about you and your life. What’s your family like? What about your
daily routine? What do you like doing in your free time?
I hope to hear from you soon.
        Best wishes,
        Roberta

                                                  Animals In Cities
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
Big animals usually come into cities because they need food. They want to find food in cities. For
example, in Cape Town in South Africa, baboons come into the city when they are hungry. They
go into the gardens of houses and eat fruit from trees. They sometimes get into houses. They
take food from cupboards and fridges. Baboons are strong animals. They can be frightening for
people, but the city can be dangerous for baboons too. Cars and buses sometimes kill baboons
in accidents. Also, human food is bad for baboons’ teeth because it has a lot of sugar. Today,
Baboon Monitors work in Cape Town to watch the animals. Their job is to find baboons in the
city and return them to the countryside.

Pigs sometimes come into the city to look for food in Berlin, in Germany. These pigs eat flowers
and plants in parks and gardens. They also eat vegetables from gardens. They walk in the streets
and sometimes hit cars. Some people like pigs. They give the pigs food and water to drink. Other
people do not like the pigs. They want the government and the police to stop the pigs because
they don’t want them to enter the city.
Many animals live in cities. In some cities, people can see birds, insects, mice and squirrels every
day. But, it can be dangerous when big animals come into cities to find food. Governments
should find ways to keep animals away from the city. But, they should do this without hurting the
        animal.

                         The Weather In the UK

The weather can change the mood of everyone in a
country. This situation is especially true in the UK because
the country’s weather changes all the time. The weather
can be very different from one day to the next. It can
change even from the morning to the afternoon. The
weather can change from rainy one day to sunny the
next. It can change from wind in the morning to snow in
        the afternoon.
The UK has four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and
winter. The weather is different in each one of these
seasons, but there is not a big change between them.
The end of winter is the same as the beginning of spring.
The summer season has the best weather in the UK. It
is usually hot and sunny, but it can sometimes be a little
rainy. British people like spending a lot of time outside
when the weather is sunny and nice in the summer.
And then autumn starts after summer. The weather gets
colder. There are strong winds in autumn. It also rains
        more often.
Winter is the coldest season in the UK. The temperature
is generally at zero degrees Celsius. This means that
the ground is often icy, so it can be difficult to walk.
Then when winter ends, spring starts. The temperature
begins to get warm, and the winds are not as strong. It
is always lovely when spring begins because it means
the nice weather in the summer is nearly back again.
Nearly everyone in the UK complains about the weather,
because the weather changes so much.

                                           Teenagers and Smart Phones
Muestra editorial solo para fines didácticos – Prohibida su venta
Today, teenagers use their smartphones all the time. They also use their computers frequently, but
they do not use other mobile devices so much. Teenagers spend a lot of time looking at their
smartphones’ screens because they love spending time online or chatting with their friends. Some
teenagers spend nearly all day with their smartphones.
The average teenager between the ages of thirteen and eighteen spends nearly five hours a
day on social media websites. Outside of their school and homework, they are online on social
media websites. Younger children between the ages of eight to twelve spend nearly three hours
in front of the screens. They watch TV shows, play online games, connect on social media and
listen to music. Sometimes they do all of these smartphone activities at the same time.
What about the homework time of teenagers and younger children? Most teenagers listen to
music and do their homework at the same time, but many also watch TV (nearly fifty-one per
cent of them) and text their friends (almost sixty per cent of them). Teenagers say they don’t
think it is a problem. They also don’t believe it has any negative effect on their studies and their
homework. Still, teachers and some researchers say this situation makes it harder for teenagers
and younger children to get information from their studies. They also say they can perform poorly
        on their school tasks.
Another fact about using smartphones and studying at the same time is that teenagers and
younger kids spend more time online playing online games, using social media websites and
chatting with their friends than with their parents and their teachers.
