people doing sports, like parkour. I do parkour with my friends on some

D Read the blog post by Mauro. Do you think Lima’s
a good place to visit? Why?

I really like Lima because there are lots of old buildings, but
it’s very modern too. There are lots of shops in the city center,
and there’s a really good Chinese restaurant called Madam
Tusan. I love going there because the food is delicious! I like
going to Miraflores too – it’s an area of Lima next to the
Pacific Ocean. It’s really beautiful there, and you can walk
along the beach or through the park.

We talked to three teachers who work with
           students from different cultures.

Kasia is an English teacher. In July and August,
she works at a summer camp in the States.

            1. “I think one of the hardest things is that they don’t all speak the same language. In the
summer, I have lots of different nationalities in one classroom: Syrian, Russian, Thai,

Italian, so I find it more challenging to help them. But they help each other, and we use
lots of gestures and drawings too.”

Sophia is a history teacher at a school in London.

            2. “Absolutely! I think London is an incredible place to see a diversity of cultures. In
my class, most of my students were born in the UK but a lot of their parents moved
here from places such as Bangladesh or Poland. When we have parents’ evening, the
students often translate for their parents – it’s a really wonderful experience.”

Nikolaos is a teacher in a refugee camp in Greece.

            3. “My students are so happy to be in the classroom after the problems they’ve had. I
have students from Afghanistan, Angola, Syria and other war-torn countries. They are
so enthusiastic about learning and feeling like children again after months of difficulty.
I love coming to school and seeing them smile.”

Can you imagine going to a school where you can choose what to study? Where you can study
Greek mythology and math one term and then change to physics and chemistry the next!

That’s the reality for students at the Brooklyn Free School in New York. The school opened in
2003 and has around 80 students, from 4 to 18 years old. One of the principal ideas of free
schools is that children are given the freedom to choose what and how they study. There aren’t
any …tests or compulsory classes. Students are involved in a lot of the decision-making at the
school, and there are regular meetings where they can suggest new courses or share ideas for
how to make the school better.

Students can study more traditional subjects, like math and science, but there is also a strong
emphasis on creativity. The music room, art room and library are always open for students to
go in and be creative, or to spend time reading and self-directing their learning.

To graduate, a student must show they have an appropriate academic record, but also complete
a self-evaluation, looking at their skills and what being a student at the Brooklyn Free School has
taught them. Many students demonstrate skills which future employers look for: decision-making
and problem-solving skills, interpersonal skills, organization and intrinsic motivation, and so on.

F Read the text and discuss the questions with a partner.
           1. Would you like to go to the Brooklyn Free School? Why?
           2. What are the advantages of a school like this?
           3. Why do you think some people think this type of school isn’t good?

                           Breakfast around the world

I have quite a traditional Japanese breakfast. There’s normally a bowl of
miso soup, a bowl of white rice – sometimes with an egg – and a piece
of fish or chicken. Breakfast is an important meal to give you energy for
the day, so my mom always makes me a big breakfast with protein and
                               carbohydrates.

I have a really sweet tooth, so I often have a doughnut for
breakfast. I know I should have something healthier, but I eat a lot of
fruit and vegetables during the day. Also, in the morning, I’m usually
in a rush, so I don’t have time to sit down and eat a bowl of cereal
or make toast. I’m usually finishing my homework before school!
           Darcie, 16 (Chilliwack, Canada)

People think British people have a big fried breakfast, but we rarely
do! I don’t have a lot of time in the morning before I get the bus to
school, so I just have a bowl of cereal and a glass of juice. Then at
break-time, I’ll have a couple of biscuits and an apple.
                                 Richard, 14 (Keith, Scotland)

On a school day, I usually have bread and oil for breakfast because
I don’t have much time. On the weekend, we have more time to
make and eat breakfast. Sometimes my dad makes beghrir which are
like pancakes. They’re delicious with fresh fruit and honey.
            Souhaila, 13 (Tiznit, Morocco)

I hate getting up in the morning! I usually have a cup of hot chocolate
and maybe a bowl of oatmeal. On the weekend, we have a bigger
breakfast as a family. We usually have papaya juice and some melon
and maybe fried eggs. Sometimes my mom makes tamales, which are
a typical breakfast dish here made with corn and peppers.
                               Alessa, 13 (Abancay, Peru)

         Animals in Mexico

The axolotl was called water monster by the Nahuatl tribe. You can find
it in the gardens in Xochimilco, in Mexico City, and aquariums around the
world. But not many axolotls exist in the wild. Scientists are very interested

in the axolotl because it can regenerate its cells.

Mexican prairie dogs live in the wild between southern Coahuila and
northern San Luis Potosi. Farmers think they are dangerous because they
eat their plants and many farmers hunt them. They can run up to 56
kilometers per hour and typically live in colonies of around fifty members.

The volcano rabbit is the second smallest species of rabbit in the world.
Nowadays, you can see the volcano rabbit in the wild in the mountainous
national parks south of Mexico City: Ajusco, Tepozteco and Iztaccíhuatl –
Popocatépetl. The volcano rabbit is endangered for a number of reasons,
including frequent forest fires and illegal hunting.

The scarlet macaw is a beautiful bird, and many people want to have one
as a pet. People take the birds illegally to sell, and now there are only 30,000
in the wild. You can see them in different countries in South America, but in
Mexico, you can usually only find them in Chiapas.

The tapir is the largest land mammal in Central America and can weigh up
to 400kg. They can live up to thirty years but can only have one baby every
400 days. Because they don’t reproduce frequently and sometimes people
hunt them, the numbers of wild tapirs is decreasing. You can find Baird’s tapir
in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in Campeche and in other national parks
                        in the country.

Marco and I are 1 better/best friends. We meet every weekend and go for a long bike
ride. He can cycle 2 faster/fastest than me, but I’m 3 quicker/quickest than him going
uphill! After our bike ride, we have lunch at my house and then play video games. I’m

4 good/better at shoot ‘em ups than he is, but he’s 5 the good/the best at driving games.
It’s good that we have similar hobbies and we get on really well. We have quite different
personalities, though. He’s much 6 better/best at talking to other people – I’m quite shy

My favorite animal is definitely a . They’re really intelligent animals, and you
can teach them to catch a ball or swim in circles. They live in water, but they’re a type
of mammal, not a fish. They can swim fast and jump high as well.

I really love . They’re very majestic, and you can see why people call them
‘the king of the jungle’. They have beautiful fur and enormous mouths with sharp teeth,
and it would be scary to see one up close. In the big cat family, I think they’re the best,
but my sister prefers tigers because she says they are more colorful.

My dad won’t let me have a pet, but if I could get one, I’d definitely get a .
They’re really cute and easy to look after. They live in a small cage, so you don’t need a
garden, and they eat the vegetables you have in the house. My best friend has one called
Monster, and he’s really funny. He runs really fast on his wheel and climbs really well too.

           Hey Stefan!
Thanks for your email. I can’t play GTA later ‘cause it’s my birthday today!
It’s a sunny day, so my mom wants to have a picnic with a cake in the park after school.
We usually do that on my birthday ‘cause it’s generally sunny this time of year. September’s
a good time to have a birthday, I think – it gets really hot here in Chihuahua in June, and
it’s not much fun unless you have AC or a pool.

around Mexico. Like, my aunt lives down in Merida, and they get a lot of rain at this time
of year. There are often hurricanes too, which can be a bit scary.

I wanted to go to Mexico City for my birthday this year, but with the travel restrictions, mom
said we couldn’t go. It’s OK in the end though as they’ve got stormy weather there at the
moment. I love thunder and lightning, but it sucks when you're on vacation!
Do you want to play Thursday evening? Let me know if you’re free.

            Hey Dan !

How’re things? Sorry, I couldn’t hang out the other day – I had to help my mom paint
            the living room.
Are you up to anything later today? We could play D&D or Dominion online. It’s raining
here at the moment, and I’m stuck indoors for the day. Some of my friends are at the
movies, but I’m grounded ‘cause I failed a math test last week.
Give me a buzz later if you feel like doing something, but no worries if you’re busy.

like me – stuck indoors with no terrace or I’d build a home gym, then there wouldn’t be
patio. It was a really difficult time, and so any problems. Plus, I’d have a lot of windows in
I know in my dream house I’d make sure my gym – where I work out at the moment, it’s

have a library! My parents bought me more eco-friendly lifestyle, and it’s a topic that
an e-book a while ago, but it’s just not lots of people my age are interested in. I’m not
the same. The thing is, I know it’s often vlogging to make money but to give people
cheaper to buy digital copies than go to ideas about how to be green. And if I do make
a proper store and so if people want to lots of money from my vlog, I’ll give the money
read digitally, I think that’s great. But in my to help animals or something, not buy a big
dream house, I’d definitely have a room house. I’d be happy with a mobile home so I
filled with all my favorite authors and a can move around and experience nature.

I started University in September and moved into the dorm on campus. My room’s really
simple –there’s a bed and a desk, and there are some shelves for my books. One thing I like
about my room ,though, is the view – I live on the fifth floor, and I have a big window in
my room. I can look out over the city, which is great, but sometimes I get distracted when
            I’m studying! Xavier, 18

My room’s a little messy, and my grandma’s always telling me I need to tidy up, but I like
it like this! I’ve got lots of posters on the walls because the walls are white and it’s a little
boring. My bed’s really comfy, and I have a TV in my room, so when my my friends come
over, we hang out there and play. Alex, 15

I really love my bedroom! In our old house, I had to share with my little sister, but now I have
my own room. It’s really simple – there’s a bed we made from old pallets and a bedside
table. There's a big wardrobe for all my clohes as well, and I keep all my books and things
in there - I like to keep my bedroom tidy! Jenna, 14

When you become an adult, life is full of boring things: cleaning the house, doing the food
shopping, feeding the dog, but thankfully, by the time you grow up, smart homes will be
doing all those boring jobs for you!

Robot vacuum This isn’t a cutting-edge gadget, as the first one was invented
in 1996 by the Swedish company, Electrolux. However, they

have evolved a lot over the past couple of decades. At
first, they didn’t do a great job of cleaning and, when
British company Dyson released their first model, it cost an
incredible $3000! Nowadays, you can pick up a good robot
vacuum for a tenth of the price with some great features.
They can sense stairs, so they don’t fall down and break,
clean much better than earlier models, and many even know
when they have a low battery and return to their charging
                                         station.

Smart fridge The smart fridge is a little newer than the robot vacuum,
with the first model on the market from LG in 2000. Again,
early models were very expensive, but prices are much lower
now, and they offer some fantastic features. Most will send
your grocery list to your smartphone, and some even have
cameras inside so you can see what’s in the fridge when
you’re in the store! They can also remind you to use fresh
products, such as fruit and vegetables, and tell you when
other food is out of date.

Electronic dog bowl We all know pets need more than just food and water: they
need love and attention as well. But this handy gadget will
take care of feeding your pet for you if you have to work
long hours in the office. With some models you can program
your dog’s meals for up to four days – this is good as it will
stop the food from getting bacteria and stop your dog from
eating it all in one go. Some even have a built-in camera so
you can watch your pet eating; with others, you can record
a message that plays for your dog at every meal. However,
there’s no robot yet that will pick up the poop!

           • Are you a gamer?
           • How often do you play video or mobile games?
           • What’s your favorite game?
           • Do you prefer playing on a console or your phone? Why?

                                           Yes, I’m a Real Gamer!

I know lots of people think you’re only a real gamer if you play on a console, but I
disagree. I definitely prefer playing games on my smartphone.

Smartphones are better than a console because you can play anywhere, anytime. Also,
smartphones are quicker to load than a console, so when you want to play a game, you
don’t have to wait for ages! It’s true that the screen’s bigger when you’re playing with a
console and a TV but the graphics are as good, possibly better, on a modern smartphone.

Finally, I think console games are more expensive. A new game for a console can cost $80,
and I don’t have a lot of money. Smartphone games are cheaper, and a lot are free to
start, so you can decide if you like the game before paying anything for it.

A marine biologist is studying sharks. She weighs different parts of their body to analyze

how they grow. The tail of the shark weighs 20kg. The head weighs as much as the tail plus
half the weight of the body. The body weighs the same as the head and tail combined.

x is the weight of the shark’s body

y is the total weight of the shark
